Before Labs
Step One: Student Information Record Form
The state requires that we gather student information, inform you about disciplinary policies, and confidentiality requirements. Complete the Student Information Record Form. If you are in multiple EDUC, TECA, or CDEC courses, you only need to complete the form once. But you will still have to submit the verification of completion in each course via Canvas. The form needs to be completed each semester, so if you completed it in a previous semester, you would need to submit it again. To complete the document, fill in the form. Once you click 'submit' at the end of the form, it will automatically submit your responses. Please double check the completed form for accuracy. If something is incorrect, you can submit the form again. Screenshot the "thank you for completing page" and upload in each course that requires it.
Step Two: Lab Manual Quiz
Each semester, students must successfully pass the Lab Orientation Quiz located in Canvas. Students will not be allowed to move forward in the process until they have successfully completed the assessment. A successful score is at least 80% or higher. Students can keep taking the assessment until they have reached that score. If you are in multiple EDUC, TECA and CDEC classes in the same semester, you must take the quiz for each class. Even if you have taken education or child development classes in the past, you must still complete the quiz to move on. Review each step in this lab manual before taking the assessment. Questions are comprehensive and cover each step.
The state requires that you complete 16 hours of classroom observation for your teacher certification. Collin College Education Department offers various options for fulfilling your lab requirements. You can complete all 16 observation hours in a PK-12 public school environment, alternatively, you can complete up to 8 hours through video observations, with the remaining hours to be completed face to face.
Face-to-Face Observation Action Steps:
1. Observe teacher
2. Complete your Lab Hour Record Sheet each time you attend your labs.
3. On the last day of observations bring with you to your observation the Lab hour form and evaluation form. Do not do an additional visit for paperwork.
Video Observation Action Steps:
1. Choose and select videos from the approved Teaching Channel video library. (More information will be provided soon)
2. Watch the selected videos.
3. Once all videos are completed download the transcript to show the videos watched and the time you watched.
4. The remaining hours will need to be completed face-to-face in a public-school setting.
If your background checks clears and the district accepts your application, then the district representative will send you an email with placement information. Depending on the district, you may receive different information.
Scenario 1:
The district will send you the name and contact information for the school, principal, and mentor teacher. With this scenario, contact the mentor teacher via email - introduce yourself, talk briefly of your purpose (observation), and schedule a time to meet prior to the observation. Allow at least 48 hours for a response.
Scenario 2:
The district will send you the name and contact information for the school and the principal. With this scenario, contact the principal via email - introduce yourself, talk briefly of your purpose (observation), and request a mentor teacher. Allow at least 48 hours for a response. Once the principal provides the mentor teacher's information, then contact the mentor teacher via email - introduce yourself, talk briefly of your purpose (observation) and schedule a time to meet prior to the observation. Allow at least 48 hours for a response.
It's best to meet with the mentor teacher prior to observation. This meeting can take place a few days before your observation, the day before your observation, or even a hour before your observation. But it's important that you meet ahead of time to discuss the process and expectations.
In this first meeting, be prepared to discuss:
a little bit about yourself - your career goals, for example
times and days for observation
observation hours needed
the Anecdotal Record, purpose of the observation
the Lab Hour Record Sheet as this requires your mentor teacher signature.
school expectations, policies, procedures, etc. (e.g. dress code, check in / check out, emergency)
