(Pk-12th grade)
Welcome!
Whether you are new to the Education Program or a returning student, we welcome you and want you to know that we are here to help you make your classroom and field experience a valuable part of your education here at Collin College. This Lab Manual has been compiled to give you the information and the forms needed to be a successful student this semester. It is important that you understand the lab manual and what is required of you, please take the time to read through the sections on the website.
Welcome to EDUC 1301 or EDUC 2301! To bridge the content of this course with real-life experiences, you must complete 16 hours of field-based experience in a PK-12 public-school classroom-based school setting or through video observations. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) governs the content and the requirements for college courses, including these courses. They set the standards for the lab hours, so we must comply with those standards. The processes that you follow for labs are dictated by the state, the participating districts, and Collin College. Therefore, please follow the processes strictly as outlined in the manual.
A minimum of 16 clock hours of fieldwork experience is required. Face-to-face observations should be completed in a PK-12 public school, Accredited Private School with certified teacher or through approved video observations. You must complete all 16 hours within the semester and by the posted due date. Failure to complete the 16 hours and submit the Observation Lab Hour Record Form will result in an "F" for the course, regardless of course performance in other assignments.
While the 16 hours of labs may seem daunting, the overwhelming consensus from previous students is that the lab portion of these courses is highly beneficial, fun, and rewarding. Collin College Education Department has options for completing your labs. You may complete all 16 observation hours in a PK-12 public school setting, Accredited Private School with certified teacher or you may complete up to 8 hours of video observations with the remaining hours to be completed face to face. As an Education Department faculty and staff, we want you to gain two things from this experience: 1) more knowledge about the art and science of teaching and learning; 2) self-reflection to see if teaching is the right field for you.
To be successful in your lab class you will need to read and review each component of the Education Lab Manual site.
As mentioned, our courses are governed by the THECB, but we are also held to additional standards: the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility Standards (which will also be a part of your professional career) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children Standards. You will see these standards reflected in your lab experiences and also in the course materials.
