WeVideo is an online cloud based video editor program that can be used on any device to edit and arrange videos. It features integrations with Google Apps and allows for students to collaborate together on one single project or work individually on their own projects. The simplicity and features of this tool allows for teachers to quickly and easily integrate video based projects into their lessons, allowing students to work on these projects either from their chromebooks or home computers without needing any prior existing knowledge on video editing.
When considering the SAMR model in integrating this tool, valuable transformation of lessons can be achieved with WeVideo. Using WeVideo to implement videos as part of student tasks in lessons offers opportunities to significantly redesign lessons to be more content rich and creates opportunities for those students who prefer a more visual style of learning. In some cases this tool can fall within the redefinition layer of the SAMR model when considering that the tool allows for creations of videos and content rich presentations that would not have been possible without its implementation.
When students use this tool they learn to express their ideas through video and images. Skills learned with this tool can be used by them in future projects and in other courses. With the ability of collaborating with other students, they are also afforded the opportunity to work on their social skills and team work skills while building on their creative strengths.
This tool while simple also requires some level of technical aptitude and is best suited for students in the middle school and high school grade levels. It can be applied and useds across many subjects and content areas. Within our district many administrators are using this tool to create morning announcement videos and teachers across many subjects are implementing student created videos within their classrooms. WeVideo offers a idea hub that can be accessed for templates and ideas on its use cases for each content area. Click Here to access this hub.
In US History classes at the high school level students use WeVideo to create a news report style video of a event that occured in history. Students are broken into teams of 2 to 3 and pick a topic or even in history. Using their textbooks, online resources and the schools media center students gather and search for information on the event they are covering. FInally their bring their resources together and put together a small 1 to 2 minute news segment that covers the event that have chosen to research. Once all students have submitted their edited news segments the teacher uses wevideo to create a final news report for the class and students then watch and review each other's segments when viewing the full news cast as a class.
