Soundtrap is an online cloud based DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) that allows students to create audio and music based projects and content. It offers an easy to use cross platform app that can offer opportunities for students to create musical compositions, storytelling projects, interviews, narratives, and podcasts. With a huge library of virtual sound effects and instruments students have many opportunities to explore their creativity with respect to audio and sound. Soundtrap also features collaboration tools that allow students to share in progress work or completed work with other students. It offers integrations into Google Classroom allowing for teachers to quickly create assignments and templates for students to work on.
When considering the SAMR model in integrating this tool, valuable transformation of lessons can be achieved with Soundtrap. Based on how the tool is applied it can fall within many layers of the model. While replacing an existing DAW tool that may be used in music classes with this tool fall into the substitution and augmentation layers utilizing this tool in classes that typically don't involve sound production to create digital storytelling or podcasts the tool can quickly transform a lesson and engage student is a way that may have never been possible before quickly falling into the modification and redefinition layers of the model.
When students are using this tool they are expressing their ideas in a new medium or form. This tool will help those students who may not have a voice or are more introverted in expressing themselves in the form of audio and sound while also allowing students who have creative abilities an opportunity to highlight those abilities cross circularly.
This tool although might seem straight forward can be overwhelming with its many options and functionality for students who have lower tech amplitude and younger students. For students at the middle and high school level, especially those with experience in other DAWs such as GarageBand this tool should be able to picked up quickly. Using this tool to offer opportunities to create digital storytelling, interviews, dialog conversations and podcasts are creative ways to implement the use of sound and audio into lessons.
In our middle school students use Soundtrap in their Music classes. Students access the app cia their chromebooks and connect digital MIDI keyboard to create projects based on music theory lessons. Student create and compose melodies using the built in sounds and instruments within Soundtrap to demonstrate their understanding of various music lessons that occur throughout the year. Being that students can access these projects at home, homework and outside of class projects are also assigned. Students submit their final works in Google Classroom and also share it with other students to get in class peer feedback. This has allowed students to move away from typical worksheets and hit unit objectives in a digital form.
