Tips - before you press record...

• Ringers off! -Make sure your phone is set to "Do not disturb" so calls and texts won't interrupt your video. Unplug landlines too if they're around or put a sign on your door "On the air" to keep visitors at bay.
• Fully charged - Make sure your phone is plugged in or fully charged so you don't run out of battery half way!
• Go short - Take very short videos (2-5 min) so you can: practice first and avoid having errors you'll need to edit out. If you're preparing a traditional lecture, you can get away with 10 min. chunks. Remember, breaking your message down into short themed chunks increases the chances your students will view (and review) them!

One of the easiest ways to make lecture-style video available online is to record narration as you move through your slides in PowerPoint. You can even do this in your pyjamas since there's no talking head video included. You end up with a narrated slideshow that you can upload to an LMS or any other site. Many laptops and computers have webcams built in. You can access the webcam on your Mac with Quicktime or iMovie, both of which allow you to record. If you want to make some quick talking head videos, this is the easiest way to do it. Watch a video on how to do it on Windows or Mac.

• Power on -> press record - If you have a quality smartphone like an iPhone or Samsung, then the video camera on it is genuinely excellent quality.
• Upload it - Depending on your phone and set-up, by tapping "share" you can upload your new video to your computer (eg. via Airdrop on an iPhone), to dropbox (if you have the app) or to youTube directly.
• Stabilise with a tripod - Depending on what your shooting, you might find a tripod handy (look for smartphone-specific tripods as most won't connect).
• Upgrade with a mic - You can increase quality dramatically and easily by plugging in a microphone specially designed to connect to phones. You can get your own for around $60 (recommended if you'll be doing a lot of phone video) or borrow one from FASS.

Echo360 is automatically set to record your live lecture in most Sydney lecture theatres. This does the trick if you just want to archive live lectures for students to review or even annotate using ARC in Canvas (add markers to draw student attention to particular parts of the lecture).
