Who We Are

Our interdisciplinary team brings together learning scientists, educational researchers, curriculum designers, EdTech innovators, and neuroscientists who share a passion for understanding how children ages 0–8 learn, create, and connect. We specialize in:

• Designing play-based curricula and digital tools that foster computational thinking, creative and critical thinking, and social-emotional wellbeing.

• Studying the neural and behavioral mechanisms underlying early learning using methods like fNIRS, observations, and mixed-method evaluations.

• Prioritizing inclusivity and equity, ensuring our work reflects the diverse needs of children, families, and educators.

What We Do

ECLS researchers tackle critical challenges in early childhood education by:

1. Creating Innovations: Developing interactive technologies (e.g., coding platforms, AI-driven toys) and curricula that make complex skills accessible through play.

2. Conducting Rigorous Research: Executing studies that range from small-scale design-based research to large-scale classroom trials, with a focus on:

   • How digital and tangible tools support cognitive development (e.g., problem-solving, creativity, and computational thinking).

   • The social and emotional impacts of creative learning experiences.

   • Neural correlates of early learning to inform evidence-based practices.

3. Informing Practice & Policy: Translating research into actionable insights for educators, policymakers, and industry partners, ensuring innovations are rooted in the science of early childhood learning and development.
