BookTrack Companion — Privacy Policy
====================================
Last updated: May 1st, 2026
This privacy policy describes how BookTrack Companion (“the Extension”), a Chrome browser extension, handles information when you use it. Replace bracketed placeholders below with your details before publishing.
Who we are
-----------
The Extension is provided by Lei Michael Lu. Contact:eastbrightmarketing1@gmail.com.
Summary
-------
BookTrack Companion helps you search for books, keep a personal reading library, import title lists, and see gentle recall suggestions for books you have finished. There is no account sign-in and no server operated by the Extension developer that stores your library. Your library data is stored locally on your device using Chrome’s extension storage. When you search for books, the Extension sends your search text to Google’s public Books API over HTTPS so results can be shown. We do not sell your personal information.
Information stored on your device (local only)
---------------------------------------------
The Extension saves data in chrome.storage.local under the key booktrack_extension_data_v1. This may include:
- Book entries you add or import (for example: titles, authors, reading status, optional progress, optional rating, optional takeaway notes, and related timestamps such as when an item was finished).
- Data derived from your library used only inside the Extension (for example: recall suggestions based on what you already saved).
This information stays on your computer in your Chrome profile unless you use Chrome features outside this Extension (such as browser sync or backup) that copy extension data according to your Chrome settings—we do not operate a separate database for this purpose.
Information sent over the network
---------------------------------
When you submit a book search in the Extension popup, the Extension sends an HTTPS request to:
https://www.googleapis.com/books/v1/volumes
The request includes your search query text (and standard parameters required by the Google Books API) so Google can return matching book metadata (for example titles, authors, volume identifiers, descriptions). We do not inject scripts into websites you visit, read the content of web pages for tracking purposes, or collect your general browsing history through this Extension.
Google services
---------------
Use of the Google Books API is subject to Google’s terms and privacy practices. For more information, see Google’s privacy documentation and the Google Books API terms at:
https://developers.google.com/books/terms
https://policies.google.com/privacy
What we do not do
-----------------
- We do not require you to create an account with us to use the Extension.
- We do not run our own backend that receives or hosts your full library from the Extension.
- We do not use the Extension to display advertising or to sell your data.
Children’s privacy
------------------
The Extension is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, contact us at the email above and we will assist with deletion steps where applicable (noting that data is primarily stored locally on your device).
Changes to this policy
----------------------
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the Extension after changes means you accept the updated policy.
