Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Formative Assessment
7A) understands the purposes, characteristics, and limitations of different types of assessments, including standardized assessments, universal screening, curriculum-based assessment, and progress monitoring tools;
Working together with whole class instruction, we read through the phonics r-controlled vowels are, air, ear, and ere on the page below to the left. Students can make this connection by reading and hearing the sound the r-controlled vowels make in different words.
Independently, the student worked through the r-controlled spelling page, seen below in the middle. This allowed me to walk the room and work with students who needed additional assistance.
Summative Assessment
7J) uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes;
With these same r-controlled vowel spelling words, I gave a spelling test assessment at the end of the week. This took place after each day during the week's review. Students took this to see where they were in their learning and how the review helped. Many students scored very well, while only a few struggled. This proved that the assessment went well, but support and accommodations are needed for the struggling students as they take written assessments such as this.
