Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Student Range in the Classroom
3B) understands how to develop short- and long-range plans, including transition plans, consistent with curriculum goals, student diversity, and learning theory;
This lesson plan artifact I taught to my 2nd graders in the Fall of 2023 Subtraction from Addition: Think Addition. With 19 students, the rate of comprehension and retention varies. Some of my students will need a slowed-down one-on-one setting to process this new way of thinking about addiction and how it helps us solve subtraction problems. For this reason, I have scaffolded instructions:
Below level: The Teacher will pull a small group for 1:1 support.
Student Range in the Classroom
Above level: Have students play a game of writing out related facts for selected dominos from the pile to practice addition and subtraction-related facts.
This activity allows high-level students to continue learning math skills with a partner.
Classroom Rules
3H) establishes high expectations for each student’s learning and behavior
Classroom rules connect to standard 3H by establishing a structured and supportive learning environment. As teachers, we must ensure that we have differentiated instruction while promoting an inclusive and conducive atmosphere for all students. I have learned that rules help keep students responsible for their learning, keep the classroom flow aligned within the building, and, most importantly, keep the students safe.
