PREG has conducted four surveys over the last three years: Town Center, Artist, and Parking Impact and Creating Community. They are summarized below, newest first.
CREATING COMMUNITY - 2025
Monterey county staff has started looking at possible uses of the historic buildings. Residents and friends of EG were surveyed on possible uses that would have community support. 73 responses were received, with good cross-section of the community responding. The survey was produced in Spanish, however there were distribution problems so no responses were collected in the time allotted. The table below shows again the overwhelming desire for a place to get coffee and food, fulfilling the claim of the developer that EG would be a walkable community. The desire for public restrooms reflects that the historic mess halls are near a park with no restroom, and the warehouses are near an entrance to Ft Ord popular with hikers and cyclists, also without a restroom. There was also interest in classes and performance spaces, as well as some interest in Maker spaces, and a couple of responses saying the buildings should be replaced by housing. ARTIST SURVEY - 2024
Restoration of the Historic Arts District has been a major goal of PREG from the beginning. The question of "who will use the buildings and what will they do?" is at the foundation of restoration. In 2024 PREG wanted to find out what kinds of artists would be interested in using space in the Historic Arts District.
There were 28 respondents to the survey, representing everything from dance and music to pottery, painting and photography. The full results of the survey are available HERE . This graph shows that most artists are interested in doing something in the Historic Arts District.
PARKING IMPACT SURVEY - 2023
The completion of the Town Center development, which is part of the East Garrison plan, will have impacts on the availability of parking for EG residents, with the addition of the Arts District, and a commercial business district.
There were 212 responses, with a broad range of opinions, that show that parking is a concern for many EG residents. The full results of the survey are available HERE . This graph shows that 20% of respondents (groups #1 and #2) had difficulty in finding parking in the evening.
TOWN CENTER SURVEY - 2023
In 2023, we asked what EG residents wanted in a Town Center. We reached out on social media and put a flyer on every doorstep. Out of a community of under 900 households we received 593 responses, and over 400 people opted in to receive information about East Garrison. As time goes on this data has been valuable in remembering what EG residents are looking for in a community center.
The survey asked how residents would get to the Town Center, what kinds of dining options we'd like, whether a grocery store is important, and what professional services we'd like. EG residents were full of great ideas! Many of us emphasized the need for local fresh produce and easy dining options.
The full results of the survey can be seen HERE but the following graph says a lot: we want a grocery store (not a big one) and dining options, plus a center we can be proud of, with a sense of "this is EG"
