The homes of East Garrison stand on what was a military base originally founded in 1917 and active until 1995. About 1.5 million soldiers trained at Fort Ord, hiking from the main garrison near the ocean back to the East Garrison to bivouac and attend services in the chapel prior to shipping out. You can hike the numbered trails in the monument or take a walking tour around EG following the historic signs. For trail maps, and to learn even more, go to the National Park Service Archives.
If you want to take a deep dive into the buildings and history go to EAST GARRISON/CAMP ORD 1940's ARMY BUILDING DOCUMENTATION 2013 by Greg Krenzelok.
In 2025, the Salinas Chamber of Commerce published two articles, by Keith Dayton, on the history and disposition of the 12 chapels built at Fort Ord during its many years as an Army base. The East Garrison Chapel is covered in detail in the first article. You can see here Article #1 and Article #2.
