Age Restriction: 13 or older without supervision
Reservation of time: Reserve time on 3D printer
Materials
• Mobile Device or computer with web-camera
• Markers and White paper
• 3D printer
• Bubble Solution
Software/Hardware
• TinkerCad account (web based)
• Makerbot Print software (for MakerBot Replicator+)
Overview
Makers will:
- Create a bubble wand from a 2D drawing on paper
- Modify file in TinkerCad
- Adjust settings for MakerBot Print
- Print a bubble wand with a 3D printer
Safety Considerations
• User must have completed Training on the Safe Operation of the 3D Printer
Engineering Design Process
Brainstorm
Armed with the knowledge from above and your interests, brainstorm different solutions and ideas to create a bubble wand. Come up with as many ideas as you can.
Choose
Choose one of the ideas from your brainstorming session. Don't second guess yourself. MAKE it and see what you discover.
Create your solution
Now is the time to start making.
On paper draw your selected idea from above.
Need High Contrast drawing
- Use black marker
- White paper
Consider area of material
- The parts of your image that are colored will be printed.
Create a Software readable file for your design
1. Visit https://www.doodlefab.ninja/
1. Allign drawing in web camera viewer
2. Click Take-Snapshot
3. Crop image
4. Click convert to SVG
5. Download
Use CAD Software to Create and/or Modify object
Log in to TinkerCad
Select "Create new Design"
Select "IMPORT"
Next, find the .SVG of the wand from the previous steps.
Select "Choose"
Select "Import"
Make adjustments to the wand design in TinkerCad
Finally, select: "EXPORT"
In Dialogue Window, select "Download"
Choose .STL format
Format .STL file into 3D printer-readable file (MakerBot Replicator+)
Open MakerBot Print
Drag-and-drop or upload file to MakerBot
Choose the 3D printer in your makerspace, in this case MakerBot Replicator+
Export the file and save onto a USB thumbDrive
Reminder: You need to be trained on this specific tool before using.
Print file on 3D Printer
Plug ThumbDrive into USB port on 3D printer
Select USB storage to print from
Select the file you would like to print
Select "Print"
Test your design
