Welcome to Fukuoka!

Our assembly will mark the thirteenth convention of the East Asian Conference on Slavic Eurasian Studies. Fukuoka becomes the fourth city in Japan to host this event, following Sapporo, Osaka, and Tokyo. Open to various parts of Asia, it is an ideal place for the gathering. I hope our foreign guests will feel the rich history of the city as a key center for cultural and commercial exchange.

Started with an agreement between the Slavic and Eurasian studies associations of China, Korea, and Japan, our conference has steadily gained global recognition, attracting increasing participation from outside Asia in recent years. This development demonstrates how a regional event transcending national borders can function as a global forum for intellectual discussion. It seems that the East Asian Conference is a link in the multi-layered structure of the scholars' community worldwide.

The East Asian Conference also serves as a place for a new generation of researchers to gain experience. We hope many graduate students will participate in the congress and experience the excitement of being part of an international colloquium. The Organizing committee for the Fukuoka congress is also composed of the generation that will lead Slavic and Eurasian studies in Japan tomorrow. As reflected in their conference theme, “The Age of Multipolarity, or the Arrival of a General Crisis,” the current international situation is not a bright one. However, it is precisely the task of researchers to confront harsh realities head-on and, through mutual discussion, forge a path forward. I am confident that our collective efforts can accomplish this task in a constructive manner.

福岡にようこそ！

スラヴ・ユーラシア研究東アジア大会は今回で13回目の開催となりました。日本で開かれるのは札幌、大阪、東京に続いて4度目です。アジア諸地域に対して開かれている福岡は、私たちの大会を開催するのにふさわしい土地です。外国からのゲストの方々には、ぜひ福岡がもつ歴史の厚み、文化や交易の結節点としての豊かさを感じていただければと思います。

中国、韓国、日本の三国のスラヴ・ユーラシア学会の協定により始まった本大会は、次第に世界的な知名度を高め、最近ではアジア以外からの参加者も多くなりました。国の境界を跨ぐ、地域単位のイベントが、グローバルな意見交流の場としても機能しているのだといえます。この複層的な構造は、各国の研究者間の対等な、横のつながりとあいまって、スラヴ・ユーラシア研究東アジア大会を世界の研究者にとっての貴重な出会いの場としています。

東アジア大会はまた、新しい世代の研究者が経験を積む場としても機能しています。今大会にも多くの院生が参加して、国際学会で議論することの面白さを知ってほしいと願います。福岡大会では組織委員会の人々も、日本のスラヴ・ユーラシア研究の明日を担う世代から構成されています。彼らが掲げた大会テーマThe Age of Multipolarity, or the Arrival of a General Crisisの通り、国際情勢は明るいものではありません。ですが、厳しい状況を直視して、互いに議論することで、将来への道を切り開いていくことが、研究者の仕事だといえましょう。ぜひ、私たちみなの力で、福岡大会を実り多き議論の場としたく願っています。
