2023 EAALG Workshop

EAALG is pleased  to announce a one week workshop on Some topics in Algebra and Geometry which is scheduled for 14 -18 August 2023 at Makerere University, Uganda. The target audience comprises of academic staff and graduate students from the Eastern Africa region and beyond.

Speakers

Algebra:  Reduction systems and the Diamond Lemma in modern mathematics

I will define the notion of a reduction system and show how to use them to compute invariants of algebras. In particular, this technique allows one to find a basis of elements in "normal form" in an algebra defined as a quotient of a free algebra by relations.

Geometry: Projective geometry and algebraic curves

Algebraic geometry is a very old and beautiful subject that has at its core the study of solutions of polynomial equations. Mathematicians realized that the right setting to do algebraic geometry is working over a field that is algebraically closed, like for instance the complex numbers, and to consider solutions of homogeneous polynomial equations in the projective space. In the first part of this mini-course we will introduce the projective space and its main properties, focusing on the behavior of lines and conics in the complex projective plane. We will also introduce the concept of parameter space of algebraic projective curves with some example. In the second part of the course we will move to some more advanced topics such as Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. While the first part will contain many exercises, the second part plans to be more inspiring rather than completely precise. We will focus on the main characters of this important area of algebraic geometry with some examples and we will explain the connections to some vibrant research areas.
