Faculty Engagement Program of the Year

This award will recognize an RAs effort to engage faculty with members of the residential community outside the classroom. The goal of this initiative should be for faculty members and residential community members to build connection with one another and engage in creative opportunities that resulted in further learning. This initiative is not limited to only academic learning or Faculty- In-Residence programs.

Winner:

"Urban Axes with Dr. G"

by Mary Stuart Elder (Crowell-Wannamker)

"Mary Stuart recruited 5 residents who didn't know each other to attend this event. The group threw axes and got to know each other for two hours before the group began an axe throwing tournament against each other! Much fun was had as residents tried to beat each other, and in an utterly unforgettable turn of events, the faculty member pulled off the big victory!

Following the conclusion of the axe throwing event, the residents decided to go out to dinner together in downtown Durham (reminder that these residents did not know each other previously!) and invited the RA too. This initiative taken by the residents provided tangible evidence that relationships had been formed and that the RA who planned this program was responsible for that happening! Compared to most faculty engagement programs that I have seen, there is no doubt in my mind that this one was the most successful, and want to reward Mary Stuart for her hard work in orchestrating such an event of that scale successfully." - nominator
