DSOMA Tutoring Scholarship Program
Bridging the Financial and Educational Gap
To support student growth, development, performance, and engagement during the 2024-25 School Year, the Davis Schools Orchestral Music Association (DSOMA) is excited to continue their Tutoring Scholarship Program, offering Free Instrumental Lessons to 4th-8th grade DJUSD Strings Students (priority will be to those in 5th-8th). Music is a valuable means of self-expression and is an important tool for positive emotional health.
All DJUSD orchestral music students are encouraged to apply for free tutoring and/or to receive scholarship funds to tutor younger students during the 2024-25 school year. Scholarship priority will be for applications received before September 30, 2024, but we will continue to match students and tutors as available through January 2025.
We will be awarding up to 15 student/tutee scholarships for 20 free, half-hour lessons each. Those with financial need will be the priority, but we welcome all applicants. Tutors are 9th grade or higher DJUSD student musicians or college-level students approved by DSOMA Tutoring Scholarship Committee.
In 2020-21, with school instruction entirely virtual until Spring, we expanded the DSOMA tutoring program to bridge the gap for as many students as possible. With continued financial support from the Chang Family Fund, we provided free tutoring to 75 students from all elementary and junior high schools in the District. Chang Family Funds were used to pay for 35 tutors across 9th-12th grade from Emerson, Harper, Holmes, DHS, and Da Vinci, along with college alumni. In addition to Chang Funds, seven professional tutors were hired with DSOMA general funds to provide tutoring support. Our sincere thanks to the Robert and Yinette Chang Family Fund for their continued support of DSOMA's tutoring program for the past decade!
DSOMA has provided over $50,000 in scholarship funding since 2020.
If you are not matched for a tutoring scholarship this year, we also have local professional tutors (see below) who can be hired directly, or we can put you in touch with local DJUSD student tutors. DSOMA is committed to supporting all students across the Davis Joint Unified School District.
