EPHE 437 - Net Games
My learning experiences
My learning experiences
Competencies focused upon in this course:
1. Under the program area of “Personal and Professional Career Development”, students will develop skills for managing projects and people (Competency #4). They will learn to apply a self-directed approach to learning, effectively organize learning environments, identify and address safety concerns, and promote effective learning experiences. Additionally, they'll use digital literacy skills to analyze and document their own and others' learning.
2. Within the context of “Professional Community Skills”, students will develop teamwork skills (Competency #7) through experiential learning. By promoting a collaborative and cooperative approach using gamified assignments and peer-based learning, students will actively demonstrate their ability to work effectively in a team.
3. From program competency area of “Exploring and Enhancing Discipline Knowledge” two main competencies will be addressed:
Scientific and Discipline Knowledge (Competency #10): "Students will apply a game-based, tactical approach to net games (tennis, badminton, and pickleball). They will learn to integrate the tactical and technical elements of the sport, deepening their disciplinary knowledge."
Instructional Techniques and Assessment (Competency #12): "Students will learn to recognize the learning needs of themselves and others. They will apply this understanding by designing and implementing modified games and using instructor and self-assessment feedback to track and promote their progress.
What are your learning goals for this course in relation to the competencies?
From considering the targeted competencies for this course I think my personal learning goals are:
I wanted note and then try implement how Dr Hopper managers people in the lesson. I feel the teams he has created generate as sense of belonging in the class that I want to use in my classes when I teach.
In my team I want to gain confidence in giving accurate and helpful feedback to peers as I learn how to apply technical cues to improve skill execution.
I have never really understand tactical concepts so feel that the idea of time, space, risk and force used in EPHE 437 allow me to start to play tactically in order to gain an advantage.
In relation to the content ideas being taught in the EPH E437 class like play-practice-play and the use of skill fundamentals and tactical concepts, I intend to learn how to apply these as a teacher to create games that both exaggerate a tactical idea and a skill fundamental, but also create close competition through modification by adaptation.
Assignment #1 - Rules quizzes and videos on course concepts
How does it connect to the course competencies and your goals? The course quizzes focused on me learning the rules of the three net games in order to understand how to play the games, but also to realize how the rules affect skill development. This really focuses on Scientific and Discipline Knowledge (Competency #10) for the games of badminton, tennis an pickleball. In the quizzes we also read about core concepts shared in the course including the 4Rs, modification by adaptation, exaggeration games and tactical concepts.
How does this assignment connect to the course competencies and my goals?
This reflection focused on analyzing and improving my application of skill fundamentals across the three sports, which connects to Competency #4 (developing a self-directed approach) and Competency #10 (using technical cues for skill enhancement). This process started to address one of my goals of feeling confident in skill development, teaching me how to move off-the-ball for better positioning, apply technical cues to improve skill performance, and by returning to home base, effectively defend space to then read the opponent to anticipate their next shot.
How does this series of assignments connect to the course competencies and your goals?
This set of three assignments were done with different partners to develop play-practice-play approach to learning to play the net games of tennis, badminton and pickleball. In each of these assignments we applied multiple discipline concepts (competency #10) and instructional pratices (competency #12). In particular we develop task cards for each focused stroke and modified games to exaggerate the use of the stroke, with tactical understanding, in the game.
In additiona, working with different partners and given time in class to develop video footage of game designs, we learned to work independantly and in relation to each others needs to play the game, modelling the competency of competency #4 - Managing projects and people.
How does this assignment connect to the course competencies and my goals?
This final reflection focused on demonstrating my ability to analyze and improve my application of skill fundamentals across the three sports, and now my ability to develop tactical concepts in gae play. I feel now I have really deveip the ability to develop Competency #4 (developing a self-directed approach) and Competency #10 (using technical cues for skill enhancement).
This summation of my learning addresses my goal of feeling confident in skill development, that I know how to use off-the-ball for better positioning, apply technical cues to improve skill performance, and effectively defend space to then read the opponent to anticipate their next shot.
The final aspect of the course was organizing our team for competitionin the three sport festival at the end of the course. This, along with the games in classes and the gamified assessment system, promote competency #7 teamwork and the sense of Kamúcwkalha (felt energy fo group attunement).
