EPHE 352 - Introduction to Physical Activity Instructional Techniques
My learning experiences
My learning experiences
Learning outcomes from the EPHE 352 course will allow students to generate evidence of learning as prospective teachers and coaches of sport in relation to the EPHE programs competencies that feed into the UVic teacher education competencies:
From "Personal and Professional Career Development" area:
EPHE competency" #2 - Growth mindset and continuous learning will be focused upon. This is equivalent to UVic teacher education professional competency #2 Develop a growth mindset. This competency will be particularly developed in the forum discussion assignment but also across course tasks. Students may also develop skills for managing projects and people (Competency #4). They will learn to apply a self-directed approach to learning, effectively organize learning environments in a local school, identify and address safety concerns, and promote effective learning experiences. Additionally, they'll use digital literacy skills to analyze and document their own and others' learning.
From "Professional Community Skills Developed Through Experiential Learning" area:
EPHE competency" #5 - Social responsibility and cultural humility, equivalent to UVic teacher education competency #6 - Respect for all learners from all cultures, will be developed in both the acknowledgement course task and working with diverse student populations.
From "Exploring and Enhancing Discipline Knowledge" area:
EPHE competency #10 Scientific and discipline knowledge, equivalent to UVic teacher education competency #9 deeper understanding of discipline concepts.
EPHE competency #12 Instructional technique and assessment, equivalent to UVic Competency #11 pedagogically context-appropriate sound practices will be developed. Both these competencies will develop from course materials, reading quizzes, forum discussion and application in the field experiences.
What are your learning goals for this course in relation to the competencies?
From considering the targeted competencies for this course I think my personal learning goals are:
(1) In relation to a “Growth mindset and Continuous learning” I want to challenge myself to move beyond what I have experienced and to incorporate more of what has been modelled in class to maximize student learning. I also want to take on some of the indigenous principles such as Celhcelh where I promote learning in my class between students as in using the reciprocal teaching style.
In relation to "Managing projects and people", I want to effectively work with my peers to create meaningful and engaging PE lessons that focus on being inclusive to all students, with the goal of being able to recognize student diverse learning across the four learning domains of cognition, affective psychomotor and social
(2) In relation to “Social responsibility and Cultural humility” I feel the opportunities in the school will allow me to take an active role to promote understanding of indigenous ways of knowing by using an acknowledge before class start, but also to teach in such a way as to encourage social interaction between students.
(3) For the "Scientific and Discipline knowledge area" and "Instructional practices and assessment", I feel the ideas being modelled in class such as teaching styles, and the insights shared in the forum and across the readings, will challenge me to grow as an effective teacher as I expand the ways in which I teach and then reflect on my planned lessons as taught in the school. My goal is to gradually improve and better understand the teaching process for meaningful learning.
Assignment #1 - Acknowledgement
How does it connect to the course competencies and your goals?
This assignment task to give an acknowledgement in class became a very important aspect of the course. This 5 to 8 min space to lead a discussion on land acknowledgement and meaning to you as a future educator allows peers to share where they came from and goals they had, going forward, to address the TRC call to action on connecting meaningfully to indigenous ways of knowing. This assignment very much connected to competency" #5 - Social responsibility and cultural humility.
This assignment promoted cross-course dialogue between peers on the different discipline cpncpets assocated with teaching PE, with a focus on teaching styles, instructional practice, teacher identity and EDID. This assignment focused on Exploring and Enhancing Discipline Knowledge. Two competencies were addrssed in this assignment, EPHE competency #10 Scientific and discipline knowledge, #9, and competency #12 Instructional technique and assessment,
Assignment #2 - Peer Teaching
Peer teaching video
How does it connect to the course competencies and your goals?
The peer teaching assignment was my first time teaching my peers with the intent of using teaching styles and modified games. The video comes from the lesson. I felt the lesson went as planned, which was good. But I needed to work on how to present tasks and really plan how to use teaching styles as I only really used practice style with possibly the start of guided discovery question. This assignment addressed competency #12 Instructional technique and assessment as I tried to apply teaching styles beyond practice style. It also addressed competency" #2 - Growth mindset and continuous learning, where I critically reflected on how to improve the way I teach to maxmize students learning.
How does it connect to the course competencies and your goals?
This assignment was our group's first introduction to the school, the class we would work with and the teacher for a 3 week period. We were preparing to do 3 lessons, once a week over a three-week period in October and November. This assignment really connects well to the managing projects and people (Competency #4) as we learned to connect in a professional manner with the teacher and map out the contextual information, such as space, equipment and number and range of students.
Assignment School Mini-unit
How does it connect to the course competencies and your goals?
This folder are the planning documents for the mini unit we taught in a local middle school. This was great hand-on experience where we developed confidence teaching a well planned unit, as we learned how to plan and reflect on the teaching processes we tried to implement in the school context. This group project really covered all the competencies in some way:
Competency #2 - Growth mindset and continuous learning
Competency #4 - Managing projects and people
Competency" #5 - Social responsibility and cultural humility
Competency #10 Scientific and discipline knowledge,
Competency #12 Instructional technique and assessment,
Reflection: What were the key insights you gained from the interview?
Goal: What are you specific goals to grow as a teacher in the next term?
