Im Gespräch geht es unter anderem um die Bedeutung von Geschwistern für Sozialisation und Persönlichkeitsentwicklung, um typische Rollen innerhalb von Geschwisterbeziehungen sowie um aktuelle Erkenntnisse der Familiensoziologie.

Symposium auf der GEBF-Tagung 2026

Am 18. März 2026 nehme ich an dem gemeinsamen Symposium „Bildungsprozesse von Lernenden mit Migrationsgeschichte: Welche Rolle spielen Lehrkräfte, Peers und Geschwister?“ des DFG-Netzwerks “Einflüsse der sozialen Umwelt auf Bildungsprozesse von Schüler:innen unterschiedlicher ethnischer und sozioökonomischer Herkunft (SUBSES)” auf dem 13. Kongress der Gesellschaft für Empirische Bildungsforschung (GEBF) in München teil.

Das Symposium widmet sich der Rolle verschiedener sozialer Kontexte für Bildungsprozesse von Schüler*innen mit Migrationsgeschichte, insbesondere den Einflüssen von Lehrkräften, Peers und Geschwistern.

Gemeinsam mit Kolleg*innen präsentiere ich einen Beitrag mit dem Titel
„Der Einfluss älterer Geschwister auf die idealistischen Bildungsaspirationen jüngerer Geschwister in Migrantenfamilien: Die Rolle des Sprachgebrauchs in der Geschwisterkommunikation.“

Meeting of the DFG SUBSES Network in Erfurt

On March 5 and 6, 2026, the DFG network “Influences of the Social Environment on the Educational Processes of Students from Different Ethnic and Socioeconomic Backgrounds (SUBSES)” convened for its fifth working meeting in Erfurt.

The focus was on discussions regarding ongoing research projects as well as prospects for further collaboration within the network. In addition, work continued on the special issue for the Journal of Educational Science.

The meeting provided an intensive and successful exchange.

DGS-Kongress 2025 – Ad-hoc-Gruppe zu Peer-Kontexten und Bildungsübergängen

Das Programm des DGS-Kongresses 2025 ist veröffentlicht!
Vom 22. bis 26. September 2025 findet der 42. Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) an der Universität Duisburg-Essen (Campus Duisburg) statt. Das diesjährige Kongressthema lautet: „Transitionen“.

Ich freue mich sehr, gemeinsam mit meinem Kollegen Markus Kohlmeier (University of Iceland) eine Ad-hoc-Gruppe mit dem Titel
„Peer-Kontexte und Bildungsübergänge: Intragenerationale Dynamiken in Bildungsentscheidungen“
ausrichten zu dürfen.

Unsere Sitzung findet am Mittwoch, 24.09.2025, von 14:15 bis 17:00 Uhr statt.
Wir freuen uns auf ein starkes Line-up mit spannenden Beiträgen, in denen diskutiert wird, wie inner- und außerfamiliale Peer-Beziehungen Bildungsentscheidungen und Übergänge prägen – in Schule, Familie und darüber hinaus.

This July, I had the pleasure of participating in the ISA Forum of Sociology 2025 in Rabat/Morocco (6-11 July) with two research presentations and by organizing and chairing a session.

🔹 On Monday morning, I presented a joint project with Helen Baykara-Krumme titled:
"Dynamics of Family Resources and Migration: Parental and Older Sibling Influences on Educational Attainment in Turkey."
In this presentation, we examined how both parental and older sibling characteristics contribute to younger siblings’ educational attainment, particularly in the context of Turkish migration experiences. Key findings: Older siblings matter more than parents. Their educational experience and migarion before the graduation of the younger sibling are linked to higher educational attainment. Females benefit more than males from older sibling educational resources, particularly when both parental and older sibling education are high.

🔹 On Wednesday afternoon, I gave a second talk based on a project with Julian Seuring:
"The Role of Older Siblings in Language Learning in Migrant and Non-Migrant Families."
This study explores how older siblings support language acquisition in family contexts and how these dynamics differ between migrant and non-migrant families. One key finding: Among youngest children with only older siblings, those in migrant families showed less negative effects on reading comprehension when their older siblings had higher educational attainment—hinting at a compensatory older sibling effect.

In addition to these talks, I organized and chaired the session:
"Multifaceted Perspectives on Gender, Family in Migration, Education in the Labour Markets,"
held on Wednesday at 3 PM, which included our second paper.

The whole conference was inspiring and a great success!

Invitation to Present at the Conference "Literacy in a Post-Migrant Society"!

I am honored to share that I have been invited to present at the upcoming conference “Literacy in a Post-Migrant Society”, which will take place on March 10-11, 2025, at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen, Germany.

This interdisciplinary conference, organized by Prof. Dr. Juliane Dube, PD Dr. Ines Heiser and Dr. Claudia Willms, will explore the intersections of familial and school literacy practices and their impact on the educational trajectories of young people in post-migrant societies . My talk will be in the Panel on "Literacy processes in informal and formal educational contexts," specifically examining the influence of siblings and peers within migrant communities on literacy and educational outcomes.

I look forward to engaging with fellow researchers and practitioners in discussions and contributing to this important dialogue on literacy.

I’m excited to invite submissions for two sessions I’m organizing at the upcoming 5th ISA Forum of Sociology (International Sociological Association (ISA), RC28 Social Stratification Section) taking place in Rabat, Morocco, in July 2025.

1️⃣ The Role of Sibling Relationships in Immigrant Integration

This session explores siblings in the context of migration and integration processes. Research is sought that addresses the dynamics of sibling relationships in migrant families and how these relationships impact integration processes.

2️⃣ Sibling Caregiving: Dynamics, Challenges, Implications

This session focuses on the often-overlooked role of siblings as caregivers. The session seeks research that explores the dynamics of sibling caregiving, its impact on caregivers and recipients, and how these roles vary across different contexts.

Our DFG network "Influences of the social environment on educational processes of students of different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds" (SUBSES) had its first kick-off meeting in Berlin on 22 and 23 March 2024. Over the next three years, our network of 14 interdisciplinary researchers aims to investigate the complex interactions between teachers and their social environment and thus contribute to the elucidation of educational disparities. The first meeting served to coordinate research interests and develop initial project ideas and questions.

20 February 2024: New publication out in Reserach in Social Stratification and Mobility with my great collegue Markus Kohlmeier. We find with NEPS data that ambivalent parental expectations hinder the choice for academic upper secondary education. This effect was stronger for non immigrant students. Older siblings reduce this negative influence for both immigrant and non-immigrant students.
