Catalog Course Description:
This laboratory course is intended for the non-science major. The course introduces the fundamental concepts of general chemistry: The Scientific Method, the Periodic Table and atomic structure, nomenclature, states of matter, writing chemical formulas, balancing equations and basic stoichiometry, the nature of the chemical bond, and Lewis structures. Laboratory experiments are designed to offer a hands-on familiarity with the principles discussed in the lectures.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Core:
Demonstrate comprehension of basic principles of science.
Course:
Use scientific notation, significant digits and a scientific calculator.
Understand and utilize the Scientific Method.
Use the Periodic Table of Elements, recall basic atomic structure, including ions, electronic configurations, isotopes and atomic theory.
Learn to name compounds using systematic nomenclature.
Write chemical formulas, balance chemical equations, and solve basic stoichiometric problems.
Describe ionic and covalent bonds.
Use Lewis Structures and Electron configurations to predict molecular connectivity.
Use online resources to view laboratory procedures, summarize observations of reactions, and complete calculations with the assistance of the instructor.
Prepare a laboratory report using a computerized spreadsheet.
Relate the basic principles of chemistry to better understand the natural world and the impact of human activities on the natural world.
