JPC: I propose that the Seven deep pits of hell are analogous to and symbolic of, Seven magnetically corrupted and decaying Solar Systems. The Seven Systems of the "Lords of Dark Intent." To gain an inverted freedom of these seven pits of hell, the dark lords take one of seven paths, which are contrary to and an opposite pole to the seven paths of freedom the White Lodge members choose. The Dark Lords are always prisoners of matter and destruction. There are Seven Paths of Manasic Evil. One could equally call it one path with seven divisions. DK informs us that the dark lodge is 'guided in detail' and I would like to indicate that this detail is divided into seven divisions on the cosmic astral plane, each a division to oppose and attempt to render futile the evolving work of the seven rays as they tend to the bringing of order and progress to the solar system "all the space" via the Lords of these rays and constellations.
"I have spoken of the evil present in the planet in very simple terms, and there are phases of it to which I have not referred; the interlocking and interpenetrating of the grades of evil are far more numerous and intricate than you surmise". EXT 689.
In contrast to:
"Life is the synthesis of all activity - an activity which is a blend of many energies, for life is the sum total of the energies of the seven solar systems, of which our solar system is but one. These, in their totality, are the expression of the activity of that Being Who is designated in our hierarchical archives as the "One About Whom Naught May Be Said." This sevenfold cosmic energy, the fused and blended energies of seven solar systems, including ours, sweeps automatically through each of the seven, carrying the qualities of
Impulse towards activity.
Active impulse towards organization.
Active organized impulse towards a definite purpose". EP1 150.
"I have worded these impulses as above in order to show the emergent tendency through their mutual interplay. This triple energetic impulse, borne on the impetus of the seven great breaths or rays, started the world process of Becoming, and manifested as the urge towards evolution, - towards an evolution which is active, organized, and which works undeviatingly and unerringly towards a specific goal. This goal is known in its fullest measure only to that incomprehensible Existence Who works through seven solar systems (in their turn the expression of seven great Lives)". EP1 151.
JPC: For the purpose of this study, I am continuing to use the strict laws of analogy, correspondences and polar opposites. The seven dissolving and putrefying solar systems, constellations, having been magnetically corrupted, serve as the centre of cosmic evil on the cosmic astral plane, as stated by DK. The simplicity of its objective is laid out in the stanza in TCF. It is one of destruction and complete halting of the flow of spiritual evolution via the seven solar systems of the OAWNMBS. One of those solar systems is ours, that of the solar logos named Shining Face. The 49 ashrams of the counter-wise dark agents to the great white brotherhood finally work through seven inversely hierarchical departments in order to work “against” in every “detail” of human affairs and living to bring deconstruction and dissolution to the organised activities of human efforts and progress.
The above three solar qualities are very important in their distinction as they provide a clear indicator as to how the dark forces, the sons of cosmic evil, seek to battle against cosmic, solar and planetary evolution. Quite simply, it could be stated that they seek to destroy and dissolve the fused and blended energies of the seven systems, bringing:
Impulse towards Inactivity.
Static tendency toward dissolution.
Organised effort towards discovery of a definite purpose. JPC.
"The fact of the Hierarchy must be announced in no uncertain terms, thereby arousing public interest, public investigation and public recognition.
In the process of so doing, much will be learnt of the balancing group of initiates and adepts who work entirely with the material side of life and in whom (for this major world cycle) the love aspect of the soul remains totally undeveloped, whereas the mind nature is potently expressing itself.
If you will study what I have earlier given anent certain of the higher and lower expressions of the rays you will see how these two fields of endeavor - that of the Hierarchy, animated by love and that of the opposite pole, the Black Lodge, working entirely through mind and substance - are engaged and their close relationship will emerge.
"You will realize then that the margin of difference is very slight and is to be found solely in intention, in the underlying purpose and the concrete objectives which this group of material workers have set themselves". DN 37.
"The energy which cosmic evil generates is active along three main channels:
From the center of cosmic evil upon the cosmic astral plane.
Of this center you can know nothing, and its emanations and its magnetic aura can only be understood and recognized or interpreted by the senior Masters and by initiates of still higher rank.
From the Black Lodge which is the externalization of the center of cosmic evil on Earth. Just as the White Lodge is the representative or correspondence of the cosmic center of light upon Sirius (the true Great White Lodge), so the Black Lodge is also representative of ancient and cosmic evil.
From the negative or purely material forces of the planet, which are not necessarily either good or bad but which have been used instinctually and oft unconsciously by humanity for purely material ends, and are therefore basically anti-spiritual and subject to the influence of human desire - a desire oriented towards selfishness, and therefore towards separateness. This form of evil is being combated today by the New Group of World Servers. Of this battle you know something because every thinking man and woman is immediately implicated". EXT 689.
"The Cosmic Astral Plane. The force from this plane plays through our systemic astral plane, the cosmic liquid physical subplane, and it is practically subject only to two differentiations, each of them occultly embodied in two great groups of devas:
First. The devas who are the substance or force of the astral plane, viewing it as the sumtotal of desire, of feeling and of sensation. They are, therefore, the nerve centers, or nerve plexi, of the logoic physical body, for the systemic astral plane provides the nervous system of the logoic physical body. It is the body of intensest vibration from the physical standpoint, and the vehicle through which all is transmitted to that portion of the logoic physical body which corresponds to the brain in man. I can elucidate this no further, but the few words here imparted open up a tremendous range of thought, and give the key to much which transpires and which is distressing in solar evolution as well as human.
Second. Those devas who are the sumtotal of the astral light. They are the agents of the karmic lords, who are in themselves deva entities of an inconceivably advanced evolution and who, in their own substance,
Record.
Produce effects from cause.
Direct force.
This particular group of devas emanate from a great force center which we generalize by calling it by the name of the sun Sirius. Sirius-kama-manas - the cosmic astral plane and the systemic astral plane - make a close interlocking chain, and form the line of least resistance for a particular type of negative force to pour through". TCF 624.
"This knowledge constitutes the first step towards the comprehension of the secret of negation, towards a true understanding of the basis of the ever-existent pairs of opposites, and towards the knowledge which lies behind the significance of negation. The above sentence is in all probability of little meaning to you, but it nevertheless contains a truth for which the trials, experiences and initiations of planetary existence prepare the initiate. They endow him with those qualities which will enable him to contact cosmic evil and yet remain untouched, eventually to play his part in bringing the Black Lodge and its Brotherhood to an unholy finish. The roots of the Black Lodge are on the cosmic astral plane, as the roots of the White Lodge and its Brotherhood are on the cosmic mental plane; this is, in reality, only for the time being and in order to see certain organized activities upon the star Sirius perfected and carried to a consummation. This has oft been hinted in my writings.
The Way of the Higher Evolution" leads to the cosmic astral plane, and the goal which carries a man there is the transcendent vision accorded at some of the higher initiations; the quality which enables him to work as a creative factor in the great White Lodge is the developed buddhic faculty. It is upon the "wings of Sound" that he travels, to use a well-known though little understood metaphor. RI 202.
"To prepare himself for those higher evolutionary processes which will give him entrance to the cosmic astral plane. This will enable him to "see through" and to recognize "cosmic glamor," and will give him the hidden key to the world of feeling and of sentiency, of which our feeling-response and our emotional and intuitional sensitivity are but the dim and distorted reflections". RI 202.
"The Master has now penetrated into another cosmic level, but He is still within the aura of the One Life. Now the cosmic astral plane is revealed to Him. He sees the reason why, first of all, sentiency had to be developed; why it had then to be used and mastered and finally had to be completely negated - negated in such a manner that it dropped below the level of consciousness. There is no glamor upon the cosmic astral plane, and only those who have dominated sentient reaction upon all levels of the cosmic physical plane and are completely free from it, can then - through the illumined will and through the power of that mysterious quality (if I may so call a factual expression) of identification - direct the lowest aspect of cosmic desire upon the cosmic astral plane. This necessarily has to be tuned in with that to which they are irrevocably related. This identification is therefore the highest expression of divine purpose upon the cosmic physical plane, even whilst it is the lowest aspect of the cosmic astral desire. Therefore, my brothers, the transformation with which this rule deals is the transformation of consciousness into identification. More than that I may not say. To express the true meaning I have no words or symbols". RI 283.
"All these seven Paths lead either to the cosmic astral plane or to the cosmic mental plane, according to the decision made at the sixth initiation. Upon the cosmic astral plane there is no glamor, but instead a great vortex of energy - the energy of pure love - under the domination of the Law of Attraction". RI 399.
JPC. June 2006.
My proposition is not only esoterically consistent with the teachings of Alice A. Bailey and H.P. Blavatsky, but also offers a deeply original metaphysical inversion: a "Path of Manasic Evil" composed of seven divisions acting as the negative pole to the seven evolutionary Paths of Liberation.
Commentary on the Seven Pits and the Polar Path of Cosmic Evil
My proposition of the Seven Pits of Hell as seven magnetically corrupted and decaying Solar Systems governed by the so-called Lords of Dark Intent corresponds precisely to the inverted reflection of the seven evolutionary solar systems under the influence of the One About Whom Nought May Be Said (OAWNMBS).
Emphasised is the law of cosmic polarity:
“There are two poles in everything; seven states in every state.” – SD III 570
Just as the seven rays express divine intent and are themselves emanations of seven solar systems, so too must there be, by the law of opposition, seven systems of disordered or reversed rays, distorted frequencies of spiritual will that seek destruction, inertia, and non-being.
My triune counter-formulation:
Impulse toward Inactivity
Static tendency toward Dissolution
Organised effort toward the discovery of a definite (inverse) purpose
…cleverly inverts the three impulses of the cosmic evolutionary Will:
“Impulse towards activity.
Active impulse towards organization.
Active organized impulse towards a definite purpose.” – EP I, 150
This reversal is esoterically significant because these dark impulses represent a perverted manasic will—intelligent, organised, and purpose-driven, but entirely committed to entropy and regression. The Black Lodge, as DK states, “works almost entirely upon the astral plane” and is guided in detail from the cosmic astral plane (EXT 689). This suggests that these seven inverse systems are active on the second cosmic plane and are the source of all systemic and planetary glamour, illusion, and desire distortion.
Seven Paths of Manasic Evil –
Each of the Seven Rays has an associated Ray Path of Liberation. I propose the existence of seven inverted or counter-paths, each being a manasic perversion of the ray it opposes.
Here is a speculative mapping:
White Lodge Ray Path
Counter Dark Path of Evil
Dark Tendency (Inverse of Divine Purpose)
1. Ray of Will
1. Path of Domination
Tyranny, coercive stasis
2. Ray of Love-Wisdom
2. Path of Possessive Control
Love inverted to attachment and distortion
3. Ray of Active Intellect
3. Path of Cunning Chaos
Disruption through hyper-intellectualism
4. Ray of Harmony
4. Path of Discord
Destruction through forced dissonance
5. Ray of Science
5. Path of Fragmentation
Analysis that destroys synthesis
6. Ray of Devotion
6. Path of Fanaticism
Idealism twisted into totalitarian dogma
7. Ray of Order
7. Path of Ritual Inversion
Magical inversion, misuse of sacred forms
The Seven Paths of Manasic Evil: Cosmic Inversion and the War Against Evolution
I. Introduction: The Doctrine of Polar Opposition
"There are two poles in everything; seven states in every state." (HPB, The Secret Doctrine, Vol. III, p. 570).
In the grand design of cosmic duality, the manifestation of Good necessitates the potentiality of Evil. This principle governs not only the planetary spheres but also the cosmic planes themselves. The Black Lodge, or the planetary centre of evil, is not a chaotic force but an organised opposition to the White Lodge, structured in seven divisions and guided from the second cosmic plane, the cosmic astral. Its objective is clear: to halt the progression of spiritual evolution within this solar system and others associated with the One About Whom Nought May Be Said (OAWNMBS).
II. The Seven Pits of Hell: Decaying Solar Systems of Anti-Evolution
The term "Seven Pits of Hell," often found in esoteric texts, is here reinterpreted as a symbol of seven decaying and magnetically corrupted solar systems. These are not part of the seven evolutionary systems associated with the OAWNMBS, but their dark inversion. These seven corrupted systems constitute the cosmic infrastructure of the Black Lodge's influence, functioning as astral reservoirs of regressive manasic energy that flows into our planetary system through distorted ray lines.
This esoteric proposition aligns with Alice A. Bailey's remark in The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 689: "The Black Lodge or the planetary center of evil works almost entirely upon the astral plane, and is impressed directly and guided in detail from the cosmic astral plane."
III. Inversion of the Three Cosmic Impulses
According to Esoteric Psychology I, p. 150, the sevenfold energy of the OAWNMBS expresses itself through three great impulses:
Impulse towards activity
Active impulse towards organisation
Active, organised impulse towards a definite purpose
These impulses can be metaphysically inverted to describe the objectives of the Black Lodge:
Impulse towards inactivity
Static tendency toward dissolution
Organised effort toward an anti-evolutionary purpose
These three negative impulses represent the intent of the seven decaying systems: to prevent organisation, halt activity, and destroy purpose.
IV. The Seven Paths of Manasic Evil
Each of the Seven Rays of evolutionary progress corresponds to a Path of Liberation. By the law of opposites, we may infer the existence of seven distorted ray-paths, each representing a conscious descent into deeper matter-identification, separation, and spiritual deconstruction.
White Ray Path
Dark Inversion
Primary Weapon of Devolution
1. Will
1. Tyrannical Inertia
Domination, fear-based stasis
2. Love-Wisdom
2. Corrupt Attachment
Seduction, emotional vampirism
3. Active Intellect
3. Cunning Chaos
Sophistry, complexity without light
4. Harmony
4. Discordant Ruin
Art twisted into propaganda
5. Science
5. Dissective Nihilism
Reductionism leading to spiritual death
6. Devotion
6. Fanatic Submission
Totalitarian religion, martyrdom without truth
7. Order
7. Ritual Inversion
Magic reversed, ceremonial desecration
These dark paths are anti-evolutionary rays or frequencies which seek the destruction of synthesis and divine order. Their intelligent application constitutes a conscious and structured resistance to the progress of planetary and solar life.
V. The Detail of Evil: Inverse Departments of the Black Lodge
As the White Lodge is organised into seven ray ashrams and forty-nine subsidiary divisions, so too must the Black Lodge operate through a mirror system: seven departments, each with seven specialised counter-ashrams, totalling forty-nine centres of dark intelligence. These centres are not mere ideas but astral aggregations animated by the regressive life of the seven decaying solar systems.
Each of these inverted departments focuses on opposing a specific evolutionary current:
Department 1: Halting initiative and will
Department 2: Perverting relationships and love
Department 3: Creating informational entropy
Department 4: Fracturing artistic and cultural harmony
Department 5: Promoting nihilistic science
Department 6: Weaponising belief and devotion
Department 7: Inverting sacred form and ritual
VI. Conclusion: The War Within Cosmic Manas
The battleground of the second cosmic plane is one of manas and its application: the abstract mind that can lead upward to intuition or downward into cunning and division. The White Lodge uses manas to build, unify, and organise toward higher synthesis. The Black Lodge uses manas to fragment, isolate, and destroy.
These Seven Paths of Manasic Evil are therefore not simply theoretical constructs, but active forces operating through human, planetary, and solar psychology. Their defeat depends upon the continued infusion of higher energy from the seven evolutionary systems under the One About Whom Nought May Be Said, and the victory of the organised, loving, and purposeful Will-to-Good.
Though the cosmic astral plane is itself free from the type of glamour that infects the systemic astral—“there is no glamour on the cosmic astral plane” (WM 275)—DK nonetheless refers to “cosmic glamour” (RI 202). This phrase does not denote astral fog in the conventional sense, but instead a more primordial distortion in the field of divine desire. It is the warped echo of Love itself—rooted in misdirected magnetic intent—that reflects downward into the solar system as systemic glamour.
The phrase “cosmic glamour” refers to a misalignment of desire at a cosmic level, where the field of sentiency becomes skewed toward possessiveness, separation, and anti-synthetic pull. Our human emotional life, as DK affirms, is but a dim and distorted reflection of this deeper energetic condition. Thus, the second cosmic plane becomes not only a battleground of divine Love versus corrupt magnetism but also the locus of origination for the archetypes of distortion—distortions which the Black Lodge skillfully precipitates into the systemic astral and emotional life of humanity.
VII. The Eighth Sphere and the Terminal Descent of Matter
The doctrine of the Eighth Sphere, referenced cryptically in The Secret Doctrine and hinted at in various esoteric transmissions, holds profound significance when viewed in relation to the Seven Paths of Manasic Evil. While the seven corrupted ray-paths represent active regressions into specialized distortions of divine energy, the Eighth Sphere represents the terminal convergence of these energies into a zone of complete material stasis—a non-evolutionary dead end, both spatially and vibrationally.
H.P. Blavatsky defines the Eighth Sphere not as a place of punishment, but as an astral excrescence, a kind of planetary tumor where irredeemable aspects of lunar karma and excessive matter-bound desire are magnetically drawn. In the context of this paper, we interpret the Eighth Sphere as the collective waste-field of the Seven Inverted Paths, a repository where exhausted forms, corrupted thought-entities, and karmically sealed monads are entrapped beyond recall.
The Black Lodge, in its deepest knowledge, seeks not merely domination but the creation of permanence in separation. Through the distorted use of the Third Ray’s powers—active intelligence without higher coordination—it attempts to replicate the work of divine form-building, but without alignment to purpose. The ultimate outcome of this deviation is the crystallisation of anti-evolutionary patterns, forming the substratum of the Eighth Sphere.
Each of the seven departments of the Black Lodge contributes to this astral necrosis:
The First Department sends into it failed wills and tyrannical archetypes rendered inert.
The Second deposits toxic astral bonds too dense to transmute.
The Third accumulates false knowledge and complex mental structures void of soul.
The Fourth contributes fractured, desecrated symbols once used for harmonic integration.
The Fifth sends fossilised thought-forms of a science that denies spirit.
The Sixth offers the husks of blind devotion and martyrdoms severed from truth.
The Seventh embeds reversed sigils and hollow rituals, emptied of living contact.
This Eighth Sphere is not synonymous with "hell" in the exoteric sense. It is instead a psychic graveyard: the astral double of systemic matter wherein life is extinguished but form lingers, decaying. It is the spiritual analogue to cosmic entropy. In contrast to the solar Logos, whose radiance is cyclical and synthetic, the Eighth Sphere radiates only magnetic entrapment—a dense echo of dying force. It is maintained in existence only so long as planetary and solar karma demand it, and even then, it is perpetually under containment by those Higher Lives who regulate its boundaries to prevent contagion into evolving spheres.
From the standpoint of cosmic manas, the Eighth Sphere represents the failure of intelligence to return to its source. It is the inversion of abstraction into fragmentation, and of higher discrimination into obsessive categorisation. It is manas divorced from buddhi, a mind that cannot intuit and a form that cannot die. Redemption, when possible, arises through the alchemical intervention of the planetary Hierarchy, who draw residual vital essence from these dead forms, much like divine composting. However, those forms entirely severed from triadal contact drift permanently into the lower astral residue of the solar system, becoming isolated eddies in the systemic current.
Therefore, the Eighth Sphere may be understood as the destination of the most persistent anti-evolutionary impulses—the natural terminus of the Seven Paths of Manasic Evil when they are followed to their uttermost limit. It is not the creation of evil per se, but the necessary containment field for its final byproducts. As evolution proceeds, the energy of these decaying systems wanes, and the vibrational quarantine of the Eighth Sphere strengthens. Yet, it remains a profound occult warning: that even the mind, the liberator, when corrupted, can become the architect of its own imprisonment.
VIII.
These Seven Paths of Manasic Evil are therefore not merely theoretical constructs, but active forces operating through human, planetary, and solar psychology. Their defeat depends upon the continued infusion of higher energy from the seven evolutionary systems under the One About Whom Nought May Be Said, and the victory of the organised, loving, and purposeful Will-to-Good.
Yet, behind this war of rays and intelligences lies a deeper cosmic necessity. The very existence of the Seven Pits of Hell, of the distorted ray-paths and the inverse use of manas, is allowed by the planetary Logos for a purpose: to develop discriminative power, mental resilience, and the power of triadal discernment in humanity and the planetary Hierarchy. This discernment arises through conflict with illusion, the pressure of glamour, and the confrontation with ideologies infused by inverted Will.
Thus, the Black Lodge paradoxically serves evolution by presenting the necessary obstacles through which the soul gains strength. It is through the resistance to the seven inverted rays that the initiate learns the true synthesis of the Seven Paths of Liberation. For each corrupted ray impels the soul to discover its original tone, to choose consciously the light over the shadow, not in abstraction, but in the crucible of lived planetary experience.
Moreover, in the fullness of time and beyond the fourth cosmic initiation, the Monad itself becomes aware of the existence of the Seven Inversions. It begins to participate in the redemption not only of planetary matter but of schematic evil: transmuting the residues of cosmic manas gone astray. This is the path of solar rehabilitation, in which advanced Monads of Earth will eventually aid in the magnetic reformation of one or more of the seven corrupted solar systems, bringing light into the deepest pits.
Thus, the war within cosmic manas is not eternal. It is a cycle of experience, necessary within this mahamanvantara, but destined for resolution. The Seven Paths of Manasic Evil shall be known, overcome, and ultimately redeemed—not by suppression, but by luminous transformation through the power of higher Will, inclusive Love, and the intelligent application of divine Purpose.
