This Year of the Horse is 2026-27 which has the element Fire to accompany it.
You may wish to include the Calligraphy for Horse (mǎ) in your painting which can be found on our Zodiac Animals pages. However, I thought it worth showing the Traditional vs Simplified Calligraphy below so that you can appreciate the difference. See below for the traditional version on the left and the simplified version on the right.
For information on Horse personality traits, take a look at the Chinese Zodiac Horse page on the Travel China site.
Chinese Calligraphy – Horse (mǎ) traditional & simplified
This year, I have taught a number of different workshops for a number of groups on aspects of the horse, all of which have resulted in some great paintings of horses.
LCBPG have also enjoyed their first in-person challenge on horses in August which really allowed for some superb translation of principles into paintings.
If you have attended any of the workshops this year and wish to have your horse included here, please do get in touch.

It seems only right to add a couple of finished demonstration pieces so you can complete your horse studies, if you have not already. I have added a few extra layers to complete the paintings...
Above are a couple of examples of paintings leading from basic principles (on the left) to a much freer form of expression (on the right).
