Some useful ways to practice IELTS listening

Some small tips in the process of IELTS listening practice, you can refer to:

  • Try adjusting your listening speed gradually from slow to fast to catch up and get used to listening to English.

  • The test always has "traps", so you need to listen carefully to avoid choosing the wrong answer. Typically, in the test, you will meet the answers that are all in the listening test. So don't be in a hurry to hear and fill in immediately, but stay calm, pay attention to words like "but", "also",... to choose the best answer.

  • Always read carefully the number of words allowed in the question to avoid writing less or more than the specified number of words.

  • Practice reading the question carefully, identify important information that may be relevant to the answer, and underline or mark them. For example, nouns, numbers, proper names, etc.

  • Listen carefully to detect words with "s", "es" or "ed", ending sounds . Combine with reading the questions carefully to determine whether the words heard are singular or plural nouns, and in which tense to divide.

By underlining the key words in the question, you will understand the main ideas of the listening passage. In addition, underlining helps you focus on specific information that you need to listen to in order to answer questions. You need to do this quickly within the 30 seconds given before you start listening.

3. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the structure of the IELTS Listening test?

The IELTS Listening test will last 30 minutes. Candidates will have an additional 10 minutes to transfer their results to the answer sheet (for the paper-based test). And there is no extra time for the computer-based test.

Candidates will listen to 4 recordings of native speakers and then answer 40 questions (each question corresponds to 1 point). Specifically, those 4 recordings include:

  • Recording 1: A conversation between 2 people in an everyday social context.

  • Audio recording 2: A monologue set in the context of everyday life, for example a speech about local institutions.

  • Recording 3: Conversation between up to 4 people in an educational or training setting, such as a college tutor and students discussing an assignment.

  • Audio recording 4: A monologue on an academic topic, such as a university lecture.

How can I get a score of 9 in IELTS listening?

To achieve band 9 in IELTS listening, candidates must do almost all of them correctly (from 39 to 40 questions out of a total of 40).

If you do 33 out of 40 questions correctly in IELTS Listening, how many points will you get?

If you do 33-34 questions correctly, you will get a score of 7.5 in the IELTS Listening section. This score shows that the candidate's listening comprehension is at a good level. Although not as fluent as native speakers, they can still understand from 70-75%.

Is the listening section the hardest part of the IELTS test?

Many test takers think that the listening part is not the most difficult part of IELTS. Instead, the IELTS Writing section is much more difficult to score, because speaking requires a higher understanding of English vocabulary and grammar.
