When practicing IELTS Writing, you should count the number of words in your writing. However, do not focus too much on quantity. If you find it difficult to write enough words, this shows that you have not answered the task adequately. Ask yourself: what can you add? What ideas can you elaborate further?

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to write 400 words in IELTS Writing Task 2?

In fact, IELTS sets a minimum writing standard of 150 words for Task 1, and 250 words for Task 2. In addition, there is no limit to the maximum number of words in the article. Therefore, candidates can completely write 400 words (or even more) in IELTS Writing Task 2 

Will writing below the specified number of words in the IELTS Writing test lose points?

When the examiner sees that your IELTS writing is too short, they are more likely to count whether the number of words you write meets the minimum prescribed amount or not. If you do not write enough, chances are high that your writing test will be downgraded.

Is punctuation important in IELTS writing?

In the IELTS writing test, punctuation plays a very important role. Failure to use punctuation may prevent the examiner from giving you a high score. Therefore, candidates need to know how to use punctuation marks in English, at least dot [.] and comma [,] to put in their writing.

How to count words in IELTS test?

Mastering the calculation of letters and numbers in the IELTS listening, reading and writing test will help you minimize the case of "wrong" points being deducted, namely:

• Numbers indicating the date and time will be counted as 1 word. For example: 40,000 = 1 word; 66 = 1 word; 10.30am = 1 word; October 18, 2022 = 1 word

• If the date is written in a combination of numbers and letters, the calculation is as follows: 18th july = 1 number and 1 word

• If there is a symbol associated with a number, it does not count as a single word. For example: 88% = 1 word; 88 percent = 1 number and 1 word

Words with a hyphen are counted as 1 word. Example: Taxi-driver

• Compound nouns when written together count as one word. Example: Boyfriend

• Compound nouns written separately are counted as 2 words. Example : University bookshop
