2025 Discrimination and Diversity Workshop

University of Exeter, University of East Anglia, Loughborough University

2-3 June, 2025

The 5th Discrimination and Diversity Workshop will take place on

Monday, 2 June and Tuesday, 3 June 2025.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a platform for scholars conducting research on issues relating to discrimination and diversity, with a focus on Applied and Experimental Economics, to present their work and network with other experts in the field.

The workshop is held virtually to allow for greater inclusivity. This page features this year's (2025) workshop. Details of previous workshops can be found here: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024.

Special Sessions Keynote Speakers

Paper Sessions

The workshop features 5 paper sessions each consisting of 4 presentations. Each session has a dedicated theme and is chaired by an expert researcher.

It is our pleasure to welcome invited speakers to chair and lead discussions in paper sessions dedicated to these topics:

Billur Aksoy

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

LGBTQ+ and Diverse Gender Identities

This session aims to explore the economic behaviours of LGBTQ+ people, the treatment they experience, and the impacts of discrimination, bias, societal attitudes, and systemic barriers across key dimensions of society. Additionally, the discussion aims to address how these factors influence policies, organizational practices, and broader economic outcomes.

Gender at the Top

This session aims to explore the persistence of gender disparities in leadership positions and how gender diversity at the top impacts wider outcomes. We welcome contributions that examine the determinants and the implications of gender gaps in top positions in terms of representation, earnings, or societal attitudes across various sectors.

Andreas Leibbrandt

Monash University

AI and Diversity

As AI systems increasingly shape decisions in hiring, education, law enforcement, and healthcare, their impact on diversity is profound. We welcome submissions that explore the influence of AI on diversity and discrimination or use AI to generate new research on these topics.

Katrin Millock

Paris School of Economics

Environment and Social Inequalities

Vulnerable populations often bear the brunt of climate change and natural disasters. We welcome studies that explore how environmental degradation disproportionately impacts these groups, exacerbating existing social and economic disparities.

Jérôme Valette

Attitudes toward Migration

Immigration is a fundamental aspect and important concern of our societies. We welcome studies that examine the individual, societal and political attitudes toward migration and their impact on the migrants or host societies.

Submissions

We especially encourage submissions from early-career researchers and doctoral students, and from all geographic areas, to submit work on these five listed topics. Given the virtual format of the workshop, we will have sessions that cater to different time zones.

You can submit a full paper or extended abstract (4,000 characters) via the online form by 17 March 2025.

Notification of acceptance: Mid-April 2025

Outstanding Paper Awards

To promote and encourage the excellent research by junior researchers we will sponsor one Outstanding Paper Award.

The award will be given to the most outstanding paper presented by an early-career researcher, and the recipient will be announced at the workshop.
