This is a Social Studies writing workshop implemeneted in my student teaching placement to address a common mistake I recognized in student writing throughout the semester. Utilizing one of our previous unit essay exams, I chose to develop a writing workshop to reinforce how to properly develop a claim, utilize relevant evidence to support the claim, and provide justification and reasoning for why and how the evidence supports the claim. The development of this skill was assessed throughout this lesson, as well as in the following unit essay exam. Utilizing previous essay scores, I had the opportunity to develop a lesson focusing on improving these scores, and measure student growth following this lesson within student writing.
This demonstrates the ability to make data-driven adjustments to the curriculum based on student development and abilities. (7G) "understands how to make data-driven decissions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student."
This is a quiz study guide which was utilized to facilitate peer assessment in preparation for a unit quiz. Students were to complete this study guide in partners, then were encouraged to find another group and compare answers. This provided the students with peer review and incited discussion on any conflict between correct answers, fostering student-to-student evaluation and growth. Following completion of these steps, students were encouraged to develop personal goals and group goals for how they want to succeed on the upcoming quiz. This was an excellent stepping stone to prepare students for the cumulative unit exam, and helped students engage in self-assessment.
This demonstrates the ability to incorporate self-assessment and peer-assessment leading to group discussion focused on the upcoming quiz. (7L) "involves students in self-assessment activities to help them become aware of their strengths and needs and encourages them to establish goals for learning."
