This is a social studies writing workshop I implemented in my student teaching to help develop students' content specific writing skills. Students were instructed to develop a claim, utilize relevant evidence to support their claim, and provide reasoning for each piece of evidence which ties back into their original claim. This facilitates development in writing strategies and processes in social studies, and focuses on student development with regards to constructing an argument. Students were assessed on their reasoning for each piece of evidence, and how effectively they tie their evidence back to their main argument. Literacy is a cross-curriculum topic which can be utilized in a variety of different ways. This lesson focuses on developing an effective argument and providing support for the argument in a way the reader can efficiently comprehend.
