PREVIEWING
Start the class by asking the students what is a dinosaur. Through effective questioning students will give examples of famous Dinosaurs (Tyrannosaurus Rex=T-Rex). Then introduce the story and tell the students how this story will teach them about dinosaurs and help them learn their names. Then read the story, stopping at key points asking student reflection questions, addressing key vocabulary words and the dinosaurs’ names. For example, when the Pterosaur is depicted in the story; I would ask the students what makes him unique among the other dinos.
DURING
When the story is concluded, the students will begin making drawings for the dinosaurs of the story. To help emphasize the newly learned names of the dinosaurs, students will depict them with their “namesake”. For example, Tyrannosaurus Rex’s name comes from two words that mean King; so students will need to depict their T-Rex with something kingly.
To help assist students, all of the dinosaurs will have a blank, printed-out depiction that students can simply color-in and draw the prop. Students who can handle the challenge of sketching out a dinosaur can after completing three of the printed out ones. On all drawings, the student must compose a sentence that explains the image.
