Universe is an artwork that brings together mythology and ceramic tradition, drawing inspiration from the encounter of two serpent-like dragons in Anatolian Seljuk mythology. Their meeting symbolizes the balance of the cosmos, duality, and transformation. Surrounding the dragons are mythical guardian figures—including Harpies, Sphinxes, and Griffins—which embody spiritual forces that guide humanity toward wisdom and the righteous path.
As a Turkish artist currently living and working in Jingdezhen, China, I created this work as a reflection of the dialogue and resonance between Turkish and Chinese ceramic traditions while also expressing my own journey of cultural transformation and intertwined identities.
The installation consists of seven circular ceramic panels. The central composition is inspired by the architectural ornamentation of the 11th–13th century Anatolian Seljuk period, while the six surrounding panels feature mirrored twin dragons alongside Ottoman İznik-inspired floral and geometric motifs. Arranged in a mandala-like formation, the composition symbolizes the cyclical nature of life and the continuous flow of universal energy.
The work is executed using the traditional Turkish underglaze painting technique with a palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, and manganese black on locally sourced Jingdezhen porcelain clay. Finished with a high-fired transparent glaze and gilded edges, the work evokes a sense of sacred unity. Universe pays homage to ancient mythology while reimagining it through a contemporary cross-cultural ceramic practice.
