Gaming

If you need any help games and apps, here's the place. Games and apps are fun but can also be dangerous. There are lots of settings that need to be checked to ensure they are safe! Games such as ROBLOX, Minecraft and Fortnight can all be fun to play, but when it comes to safety settings, is it better to be safe than sorry!

Let's talk about how to stay safe on games and apps.

On online games never friend anyone you don't know or give anyone your personal information like your address, phone number and details to your game account.

Gaming is the running of specialised applications known as electronic games or video games on game consoles like X-box and Playstation or on personal computers (in which case the activity is known as online gaming).

Similar to tobacco, alcohol or drugs, screen time or video games can become an addiction if it damages your health and relationships, and you are unable to control it. It can harm your health and we suggest you should take a break after a while from screen time.

While your playing Minecraft remember not to fall for anyone's false words like they will give you something in game if you give them your bank details.

Minecraft can be fun most of the time, but if you go on a public server, it can be upsetting if someone destroys your building especially if you worked hard.

If you come across mean or toxic players who bully you remember not to bully them back - report them and don't let them get in the way of your gaming. You can simply report them. This happens a lot in the game Fortnight when people can bully you with emotes or if you don't have V-bucks.

Reporting a person can essentially help if they are an exploiter. Exploiters are people who "hack" into game files and make changes to them. They range from minor incidents to major ones. Don't try to argue with the person if they refuse to stop being rude. Arguing only makes it worse and sets up a whole scene for other players to read.

Scams: An example of a scam would be someone who offers you a valuable item for your currency. After the trade, they'll get your items, but you won't get theirs. (This is a major problem in the game Adopt Me; a lot of players scam other unsuspecting players and end up with their valuable pets.) Another one would be trading accounts. You might lose your account and all of the progress, Robux, etc. that you have on that account.

Roblox is a platform where anyone can make a game. This means people can make games with viruses in, or horror games disguised as kids games. This can end up in people getting scared or upset, and maybe even hiding these feeling from adults.

Remember to talk to a trusted adult if you see anything upsetting in a game.

Gaming (Tips)

If you're gaming with strangers do not:

  • Share any personal information about you, your family or your friends e.g your password, your address, your phone number etc

  • Allow yourself to be cyber bullied (if you are, speak to a trusted adult)

  • Cyberbully other people

The most basic step to keep your Nintendo account secure is to use the built-in 2-factor authentication feature. This feature means you must have a secondary device, such as a phone, to log into your account. While it’s less convenient, it means hackers are less likely to break through your account’s security.

Log into your Nintendo account and click ‘Sign-In and Security Settings.’ Then, under the ‘Two-Step Verification’ heading, click ‘Edit’ and follow the simple instructions to set-up two-factor authentication.
