The environment of the stomach is very acidic (~pH 2). This is because the stomach produces gastric acid, which helps to break and dissolve solid food chunks into liquid slush.
The stomach is a muscle. As it contracts (by peristalsis), it helps to churn and mix food with the acid to create a liquid slush called chyme.
Stomach churning is an example of mechanical digestion!!!
The stomach contains specific enzymes that start the digestion of proteins. These enzymes work best in a very acidic environment.
NOTE: The enzymes from the mouth that travel to the stomach with the chewed food denature in the stomach- this environment is too acidic for enzymes produced by the mouth!
