SMALL INTESTINE:
You may think that the stomach is your "main digestive organ," BUT IT IS NOT. MOST chemical digestion takes place in the small intestine!!!
The small intestine is a 20 ft long tube that food spends about 2-6 hours in.
Food is pushed through the small intestines by peristalsis.
The small intestine produces MANY digestive enzymes that finalize the digestion of food. Here are a few that are found in the small intestine:
Trypsin- a protease (protein-digesting enzyme) that finishes the breakdown of proteins into amino acids (don't forget that protein digestion starts in the stomach)
Amylase- enzymes that finish the digestion of carbohydrates into simple sugars. (don't forget that carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth)
Lipase- enzymes that catalyze the digestion of fat. Fat digestion begins in the small intestine.
