- The digestive tract (also known as the gastrointestinal tract, the GI tract, the alimentary canal, or as I like to say- the food tube!) is a continuous series of tubes that connects the mouth to the anus. The digestive tract includes the organs that the food actually passes through- the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.
- The liver, pancreas, salivary glands, and gallbladder are referred to as accessory organs. They food does NOT pass through these organs. The accessory organs aid in digestion by producing enzymes and chemicals that are released into the digestive tract. Let's look at each accessory organ to see its role in digestion.
