The role of the pancreas in the digestive system is to produce "pancreatic juice"
Pancreatic juice is a mixture of digestive enzymes and sodium bicarbonate
The pancreas releases its pancreatic juice into the small intestine.
Enzymes:
The pancreas produces different proteases (enzymes that breakdown proteins), amylases (enzymes that digest carbohydrates), and lipases (enzymes that breakdown lipids)
These enzymes are released into the small intestine with the pancreatic juice.
Sodium Bicarbonate:
Sodium bicarbonate has the job of neutralizing the very acidic chyme that enters the small intestine from the stomach.
FUN FACT: The pancreas also produces a hormone called insulin. We will learn about the role of insulin in another unit, but it does not help to digest food.
