ENZYMES
All enzymes are
PROTEINS
The job of enzymes is to
catalyze
(speed up)
metabolic reactions
in the body.
Metabolism
includes making energy, removing waste, building cell structures, digesting food, etc.
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES
are found in the digestive system and
catalyze the breakdown of organic food molecules.
Each enzyme can catalyze
ONE
specific type of reaction
Enzymes are built with
SPECIFIC shapes
and
match
their substrate like a
lock and key.
Enzymes can only function in specific
temperature
and
pH levels
.
If an enzyme in not in the right temperature or pH range, it will
denature
(
lose its shape
) and no longer catalyze chemical reactions.
