Didier François, Thomas Baeté and Philippe Malfeyt

Whether the western lute and the nyckelharpa have ever sounded together in the course of time is a difficult question. The fact is that they were both depicted, in all sorts of guises, on medieval frescoes and in manuscripts such as the "Codex Manesse" ( 13th century). They were also mentioned in the music encyclopaedias of Agricola (16th century) and of Michael Praetorius (Syntagma Musicum, 17th century). It may be said that the lute was associated with the "court culture mirroring antiquity" and the nyckelharpa with "folk culture"

Under the Shakespearean motto "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy" Didier François, nyckelharpist and passionate advocate of the new nyckelharpa movement, the lutenist Philippe Malfeyt, one of the pioneers of this instrument in Belgium, and when played in trio Thomas Baeté (viola da gamba) enter into a fascinating dialogue with history.

They arrange music by lute virtuosos such as Robert Johnson, Robert de Visée and Silvius Leopold Weiss, gamba music by Marin Marais, violin partitas by J.S. Bach, John Dowland, Antonio Vivaldi, and improvise on dansante "folky tunes" or their own compositions. Their sophisticated palette of sounds leaves no one unmoved. The opulence of struck, plucked and empathetic strings speaks for itself: 100% honeycomb, soft sweets for the soul.
