HOW THE EUROPEAN CITY ENDS.
Densifying : Dessau Ex-Slaughterhouse
Nowadays, the european city collide with the surrounding landscape in a disorderd fashion. The limit of the city is without a clear finition, since no urban device enmarks the end of the city tissue in the XXth and XXIth century - unlike what happened in the past.
Sprawl has never been an option. How should or could then european cities end? The course uses the northern part of Dessau (Germany) as a case study to explore the end of the city and its relation with rural areas nearby in a tipical scenary.
The existing zoning plan of 15+ years ago just partially integrated the former industrial site (XIXth century) to establish a new clear border. Industrial landmarks and infrastructure defines a urban landscape without form, but the one of the streets, drifting in the greenery alongside the river Mulde and its unexplotied promenade.
