Methods of Teaching Vocal Music online:
Stage 1 - Audio and video of the lessons to be recorded by teacher in smaller sections and sent to students to make them familiar with the music
Only for listening purpose. (Smaller files help for easy download and facilitate focussed concentration)
Stage 2 - to send recorded audio with space in between for students to repeat.
Enables the student to repeat smaller sections as sung by the teacher
Stage 3 - teaching and making them to sing in class with the teacher
Gives a sense of group singing in class
Stage 4 - listening to each student singing individually
Enables teacher to eliminate mistakes
Pedagogical advantages / Disadvantages:
•Advantages : - At home, flexible timings, No travel
•Disadvantages:- Disturbances, Poor Data, non availability of Laptop, Android phone, IPod.
•Lack of seriousness and discipline
•Gap in the teaching learning process creating a sense of vacuum
•Fail to achieve mental satisfaction and to enjoy aesthetic pleasure
•Group singing in Class, Repeated rendering with the teacher and classmates – totally missing
Adapting to the Changing Scenario:
•To address all students – potential, location & resource - wise
•Similar methods adopted to teach visually challenged students
•Instead of Communicating through Internet Data, Voice calls are preferred to overcome the delay in transmission of sound and disturbance due to fluctuating data
•Evaluation process through voice conference calls.
Suggested methods:
•Conference call facilities can be used to group 3 -5 students together
•Using digital Tambura, Talameter while recording and practicing
•Teaching Kalpita sangita can be attempted through online
•Teaching Manodharma requires experimental methods, customized to each student.
•That which had not been executed could however be compensated in the following semesters
