The USS is a shell-based, POSIX-compliant implementation of UNIX environment designed for z/OS.
The USS file system is hierarchical, offers a tree-like structure of directories (similarly to DOS, these would be folders in Windows term) and files.
Connecting to the z/OS via USS means a connection through Secure SHell (SSH), with an application like PuTTY. On older Windows OSs this must be pre-installed.
The terminal does not work in PowerShell under Windows unless a normal command prompt is opened with the CMD command. In order to check the existence of SSH, type SSH on the prompt.
Login is possible by this command:
ssh username@IPaddress
The session will be timed-out after a given amount of idle time. In such case the terminal will appear to be frozen. Type this to finish the logout process:
~.
After loggin in, the USS will set the home directory of the user as actual.
A path contains the way to reach a directory or a file in a directory.
A directory marks the directory or the path to the directory.
A file marks the file or the path to the file.
When typing a path or similar, press TAB to automatic name search. The system will type the characters until there is a branch in naming.
EXAMPLE FOR AUTOMATIC TYPING:
A command can have parameters and switches. If there are multiple switches, their order is interchangeable:
command -a "pattern" -b
command -b -a "pattern"
If the switches do not take arguments, they can be written separately or chained:
command -a -b -c
command -abc
command -bac
If a switch requires an argument, that switch cannot be chained:
command -a 13 -bc
For listing only directories:
li -d */
For listing only directories along with their contents:
li */
For editing a file, if it is installed, the vi application can be used too:
vi <file>
Rights:
d (directory)
r (read)
w (write)
x (execute)
0 (no right)
1 (--x)
2 (-w-)
3 (-wx)
4 (r--)
5 (r-x)
6 (rw-)
7 (rwx)
Subjects to rights:
u (user)
g (group)
o (others)
Adding rights with chmod:
<u|g|o><+|-><rightcharacters>[,<u|g|o><+|-><rightcharacters>, ...]
<u|g|o><=><rightcharacters>[,<u|g|o><=><rightcharacters>, ...]
<numberofrightsforuser><numberofrightsforgroup><numberofrightsforothers>
By default, managing rights or rendering to group will not apply to child objects except -R switch is used.
