Devilian (Gamebryo 2.6+PathEngine) is an MMO-ARPG that was developed by Bluehole Ginno and published by GoodGames (a digital portal operated by True Digital Plus) in Thailand (May 6, 2015) and Trion Worlds in North America and Europe (December 10, 2015; Founders had 2-days of head start on the 8th).
The game was originally published by Hangame (a gaming portal operated by NHN Entertainment) in South Korea (soft launched as an open beta test in August 2014). A localized Chinese version was also created and expected to launch shortly after the Thai release. NHN China (a subsidiary unit of NHN Entertainment) was the intended publisher but with Hangame switching to mobile (due to NHN Entertainment making a decision earlier in 2015 to divest itself from the PC MMO market), the Chinese version has never been released (Xunlei Games became the intended Chinese publisher and ran several trial tests in 2015).
Devilian Korea went offline in September 2015 after receiving notice in July about Hangames focus shift to mobile. Bluehole Ginno reacquired the publishing rights and player data from Hangames with plans to relaunch with a new Korean publisher along with some changes (taken from updates made for GoodGames and Trion Worlds) in the first half of 2016. The decision to relaunch in Korea was eventually reconsidered after re-evaluation (details will be covered in another section).
Devilian Mobile (Unreal Engine 4) was also developed by Bluehole Ginno and published worldwide by GAMEVIL in 2016; the mobile version shares the name but has very little of the game play of the PC MMO version. This site originally was going to focus primarily on the PC MMO but I will now include details of the mobile version in a separate section. In August 2017, GAMEVIL announced they would be terminating the service. On October 30, 2017, GAMEVIL announced the actual termination date; Devilian Mobile came to an end on November 29, 2017.
Bluehole Ginno (formerly Ginno Games before being acquired by Bluehole and operated as a subsidiary of the Bluehole Alliance) began development of Devilian in 2009 (initial codename was "Immortal"). The background of this will be covered in another section. During the acquisition by Bluehole, the game received a massive overhaul in terms of its graphics and game systems (many of the original designs were completely revamped; a large number of assets from TERA were used including the addition of the Cannon Shooter class whose character model was derived from the Elin race).
Trion Worlds version of Devilian features redesigned and renamed classes as well as a significant number of refined/streamlined game systems, quality of life improvements, and updated graphics tailored to a western audience. It differs considerably in many areas from both Korean and Thai Devilian to where it is its own fork of the game. The Thai version shares more similarities with the Korean version but also has some changes/streamlining made to dungeons and consumables (in addition to newer content that was never reincorporated back into the Korean version due to the loss of publishing).
As of September 2017, Bluehole Ginno was renamed to PUBG Corporation. All facets of the Devilian franchise were transferred to parent Bluehole (note that I will have an individual section covering this information).
As of January 19, 2018, Trion Worlds has announced they were sunsetting Devilian on March 5th at 3PM Pacific (11PM UTC or Midnight CET for players on Elara). This was a mutual agreement by both Trion Worlds and Bluehole. The Thai publisher says they will continue operating their version of the game so long as Bluehole remains committed to their publishing contract/licensing agreement (which to date, they are).
UPDATE: On February 28, Trion made a last minute change to the above time. The closing time is now 12PM noon Pacific (8PM UTC or 9PM CET for players on Elara).
On March 5, 2018, the servers were shut down on schedule by Trion Worlds.
On May 7, 2018, True Digital Plus announced they would be terminating Devilian Online for the Thai region on May 9th since their contract with Bluehole Ginno had ended on April 30th. The servers had been plagued with technical issues over the past 5+ months (having been down since late December) making this closure academic.
This now brings the entire Devilian franchise (PC and mobile) to a complete closure.
Overview (adapted from the press release)
You are the last vanguard of Nala (Aelkeina is the original name of the game world that was shortened to Nala for the Trion version), a half-devil hero fighting to save your world from a fallen god. Join the fray in this vast, persistent-world action RPG as a Berserker, Evoker, Shadowhunter, Cannoneer, or Tempest (pay walled). Each class possesses a unique Devil Form you can level and gear up – and unleash – to wreak havoc on your foes. Customize your character with advanced Skill Paths, collectible Talismans, weapons, armor, and other implements of dark intent.
Devilian combines the fast, visceral combat of an action RPG with massively multiplayer scale. Dispatch your fellow players in 20-vs-20 battlegrounds, get intimate in 3-vs-3 affairs, and reap the rewards of wars fought between entire guilds. Come for the action, stay for the action … and the PvP, Crafting, Quests, Trading, Cities, Mounts, Pets, Guilds, Guild Alliances, Wars, and Dungeons that make Devilian a fully-featured MMO – albeit one with a fresh perspective and devilish twist.
About This Site
This is an ongoing work-in-progress meant to briefly cover some of the obscure information regarding the game as opposed to duplicating efforts with a general wiki or one that concentrated on guides. Neither format was pursued because there was a dynamically driven website named DevilianDB which contained both automated and user generated content that fulfilled both objectives. DevilianDB was unfortunately taken offline by its creator in August 2016 due to the lack of use/traffic.
Running this site as an actual wiki is also not viable since there is almost no way to source the information related to the Korean release (since it is offline) unless you played all 3 versions of the PC MMO beyond the questing stage. I will not be posting exact details covering every single aspect since part of the playing this (or any other) game is discovering and learning how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
As of February 2018, I have decided to re-purpose a portion of this site as a repository for information that I had previously posted on my blog. I am also archiving various threads from the official forums (since they will be taken offline two weeks after the game sunsets) and I'll also be recreating the information from the former Devilian Korea Inven site.
Why? So that none of this information about the game is completely loss to the passage of time.
