Program Work-based Learning Policy--Off-site and Virtual Experiences
Career-technical education is training which incorporates learning theory from a textbook or other source and applying the learned theory in a real-world setting. Work-based learning (WBL) is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills and develop their employability
There are various techniques which help students learn to apply the theory. Several of these techniques may require off-site learning opportunities in actual business in the area in which the student resides. These off-site learning opportunities could be in any of the following formats, as well as other specific to certain programs. As shown below, students in an Ohio CTE pathway are required to obtain 250 hours of WBL during their experience in the pathway. These hours can begin to accumulate as early as 9th grade.
Types of Work-Based Learning
OHVA provides students with a wide range of WBL opportunities, many of which consist of virtual experiences, to accumulate hours. Participation in school provided WBL opportunities is highly encouraged as it adds to the benefits of being in a CTE pathway. As demonstrated in the state guidelines, all of the following may be offered, and count as WBL:
Off-Site Placement or Internship
Apprenticeship/Pre-Apprenticeship
Remote or Virtual Placement
Entrepreneurship
School-based Enterprise
Simulated Work Environment
Expected Student Behavior
It is expected that the behavior of students during these off-site learning opportunities will always be appropriate and professional. Students should recognize that having the opportunity to participate in experiences at off-site locations is a privilege. This privilege has responsibility that accompanies it. The following are requirements for participating in any off-site experiences that are facilitated through OHVA’s CTE Program.
It is the student’s responsibility to:
Act professionally at all times (language, tone, actions, attire).
Be at their assigned location during the designated times.
Call appropriate supervisor/teacher/administrator if they must be absent.
Follow all rules of OHVA while they are interacting in the community, recognizing that their behavior is a direct reflection of the CTE Program and OHVA.
Realize that violation of any of the above will result in their no longer being able to participate in school facilitated off-site experiences. There will be no second chances!
*If a student wishes to continue with a CTE Program with violation of any of the above criteria, that student will meet with the CTE administration and be placed on a behavior contract (attached). The parent will be notified of this decision.
*Violation of the behavior contract will result in the student being removed from the CTE Program
