Ohio Virtual Academy’s Career Technical Education (CTE) Program exists as an alternative to the general high school curriculum. This program enables the individual to assume responsibilities, to perceive world-of-work concepts in a realistic and work-oriented environment, to gain positive social attitudes, and to learn career-technical skill competencies in manipulative and technical areas.
By relating to occupational goals, the school gives definite purpose and meaning to its educational programs. It provides the technical knowledge and skills necessary for employment. Also, of importance is the development of abilities, attitudes, work habits, and appreciations which contribute to a satisfactory and productive life.
While the CTE Program makes its unique contribution in the preparation of students for work, young adults of today should know how to survive physically, socially, and mentally in their communities. Through a career-technical education, they acquire knowledge of socially acceptable ideas, governmental methods and standards, and effective methods of communication. In preparation for living in a complex world, OHVA’s CTE students will be prepared for immediate employment and will also be given the opportunity to learn how to adjust to a future of change.
The facilities, staff, and curriculum offerings exist to provide opportunities for the maximum amount of learning related to high school competencies and the development of positive social attitudes for varying groups of individuals desiring a career-technical learning experience. This includes students enrolled in career-technical programs and special education programs, as well as college-bound students desiring practical experience in a major field of interest. OHVA strives to work with students on an individual basis in order to help them develop their career-technical potential and to reach their career goals.
The Ohio Virtual Academy Board of Education subscribes to the policy of non-discrimination and recognizes its obligations, where feasible, to provide students from the Ohio Virtual Academy School District with an education which will enable them to function as contributing members in a democratic society.
To implement this philosophy, Ohio Virtual Academy’s CTE Programs will:
Provide a range of curricular offerings from remedial to advanced, suited to student needs through middle school and high school education offerings.
Provide a career-focused education that will fulfill state requirements as well as requirements held by OHVA for career-technical students.
Provide a curriculum sequence between secondary and post-secondary education through articulation and dual enrollment for those students planning for continued education after high school.
Provide curricular opportunities for students to address entrepreneurship, economic education, and life-long learning concepts.
Provide basic computer literacy training for each student.
Provide supportive services to each student and parent in order to meet personal, social, educational, and occupational goals, both traditional and nontraditional in nature.
Provide a qualified, competent staff to motivate and instruct students so that each student may achieve the highest level of performance for that student’s capabilities.
Involve parents in the total school program by encouraging communication between home and school, and by providing opportunities for parents to participate in or observe school programs.
Provide opportunities for each student to participate in co-curricular activities through career-technical student organizations and in activities offered by Ohio Virtual Academy.
Make prudent use of all resources available in meeting the career-technical education training needs of students.
Provide a climate in which students develop pride in their achievements and successes and display that pride within the school and community.
Involve business, industry, and higher education in curriculum development leading to the fulfillment of current and future employment needs and post-secondary education.
Through implementation of these objectives, Ohio Virtual Academy’s CTE Program plans to realize the following outcomes:
Meet students’ individual needs, both educational and occupational, enhancing the potential for all students to complete high school.
Help students to become employable to the best of their abilities.
Offer competency-based programs to meet the needs of the work force requirements for skilled, adaptable, and productive people.
Increase interaction between the career-technical education system and business, industry, labor, education, community, and governmental agencies.
Increase area buying power and stimulate economic growth with career-technically educated citizens.
Produce educated, socially responsible, and productive citizens.
