In the aftermath of the recent earthquake, the Surigao del Norte Schools DivisionโDisaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), in close coordination with the Division Engineer and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), conducted a series of joint post-earthquake inspections and validation activities to assess the condition of affected school buildings across the division. These coordinated efforts aimed to ensure the safety of learners and personnel while providing a reliable basis for insurance claims and post-disaster interventions.
The inspection and validation activities commenced on December 11, 2025, covering three (3) schools in Anao-aon District. The joint team systematically assessed structural conditions of insured school facilities, with GSIS personnel validating reported damages to determine eligibility for appropriate insurance coverage and related assistance. This initial activity laid the groundwork for a division-wide assessment of earthquake impacts on school infrastructure.
Validation activities continued on January 14 and 15, 2026, expanding to several districts across the province. Schools in Bacuag, Placer, Sison, Malimono, and Anao-aon Districts were thoroughly inspected to determine the extent of structural damage and ensure accurate documentation. These efforts underscored the commitment of DepEd and its partner agencies to conduct evidence-based assessments that support timely recovery, rehabilitation, and safety planning.
The joint post-earthquake inspection and validation officially concluded on January 16, 2026, with assessments conducted in a total of eight (8) schools across Mainit, Tubod, and Alegria Districts. The results of the GSIS-led validation activities will serve as a critical reference for insurance processing, post-disaster recovery measures, and the implementation of necessary safety and risk reduction strategies. Through this collaborative effort, the Schools Division reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding school communities and ensuring the continuity of basic education services even in the face of disasters.
