Texas Thespians will offer virtual competitions starting November 28th, 2024 - January 12th, 2025
Delegates who do not Qualify for Nationals at a Festival may resubmit their Thespy for evaluation. Delegates may also submit a second Thespy event using the virtual option.

We are offering an additional opportunity for students to qualify for Nationals and compete in Non-Qualifying events.
This opportunity is open to High School and Junior High/Middle School Thespians.
Please let Ms. Phillips know you intend to compete by Dec. 1st. Please pay your $15 by Dec. 8th.
We need to pay and submit material ALL before we leave for holiday break in December.
Virtuals will be taped and you will need to wear your audition blacks/darks. If technical students additional time, we should have those submitted by Jan. 10th at the very latest. (Ms. Phillips will be out Jan 11-13th)

National Qualifiers: If students achieve the highest scores, Individual and Group events, Playwriting, Musical Composition, and Short Film are eligible to advance to National Competitions at the International Thespian Festival in Indiana.
Individual Events or IEs are competitive events which qualify for National Competitions at the International Thespian Festival in Indiana.

Schools may enter 15 National Performance and Technical Thespy Events. National Short Film and Playwriting Events are not included in the 15 allowed.
Schools may have unlimited entries in Short Film and Playwriting, but a single student may only submit 1 entry in any category. This means you cannot submit 2 short films from a single student.
If a student is entered in a Performance or Technical Thespy Event, they may also submit either a Short Film or Playwriting entry.
Performance Thespys:
All entries and titles must be entered into the registration system by October 20th, 11:59 PM.
After October 20th, changes will not be allowed.
Technical Thespys: NEW PROCESS!
Technical Thespy participants will need to be entered into the registration by October 20th, 11:59 PM
Directors will need to create a submittable account to upload Technical Thespy materials.
Technical Thespy Title Information will need to be entered in Submittable by October 30th, 11:59 PM.
All scoring for Technical Thespys will be done using online ballots during live presentations at the festival.
Is there Acceptable & Unacceptable Material?
Acceptable material for all Individual Performance Events:
Published scripts written for the theater ONLY
Songs from a musical that have been written for the theater (regardless of its previous publication as a classical or popular song).
Unacceptable material for Individual Performance Events:
Poetry
Fiction
Scripts or songs from films
Scripts or songs from television
Stand-alone monologues found on the internet or in monologue books
Popular songs not used in a published work for the theater
Classical songs not used in a published work for the theater.
LEADERSHIP CHAIR- Responsible for leading the troupe in Leadership activities beginning in the summer and throughout the year. This person will make sure all the Leadership Tasks are done and completed in a timely manner so that the troupe can uphold the Honor Troupe status. Responsible for assisting the Director and leading Troupe in all ITS activities, department activities and leading by example.
EVENTS COORDINATOR & SOCIAL MEDIA CHAIR- responsible for assisting the Leadership Chair and planning fun activities for each General Meeting, recognizing Thespian birthdays and assisting the Leadership Chair in planning Orientation Meeting activities. Helps the director maintain the department’s social media.
PROCEDURES & RECORDS CHAIR - responsible for maintaining a record of all meeting minutes, updating the Troupe Constitution and Bylaws and submitting yearly documents for archival purposes. Responsible for maintaining accurate point records (including up-to-date contact information) and making them available for each student’s personal review, as well as assisting Director in ensuring production programs and other department publications include accurate Thespian membership and honors designations
HISTORIAN and PUBLICITY CHAIR - responsible for publicizing all shows in the community and writing press releases to send to the paper. This chair will document activities through photography and videography and creating slideshows and lead the creation of the scrapbook. This chair will work closely with the Communications and Community Service Chair
COMMUNICATIONS & COMMUNITY SERVICE CHAIR - responsible for planning and executing Troupe's yearly community service event (and additional events), and building relationships with community businesses for program sponsorship and advertisement. This position also includes continual communication with the parents and booster club to ensure the department’s needs are taken care of. This chair will work with the Communications and Social Chair
THEATRE OPERATIONS CHAIR- responsible for all the technical elements of the department and the theatre buildings, (auditorium, dressing rooms, & storage rooms) This person will be the “go to” person for all events in the auditorium and should be enrolled in a technical theater class.
FUNDRAISER CHAIR - responsible for maintaining a record of money earned against money needed for yearly expenditures, planning and executing Troupe's fundraising events, creating/maintaining a record of local businesses that offer Honors Student discounts to Thespians.
STUDENT RELATIONS & RECRUITMENT CHAIR
This individual will also scout and recruit onstage and offstage talent for the department. This person will assist the Middle School Theatre teacher and help to lead activities between both theatre departments.

This handout was given to students attending Thespian Festival. Please join Ms. Phillips, Monday, 11/14 at 5:30 in the Theatre Arts classroom if you have any questions or would like to drop off snacks or waters!

In monologues, the skills that will be measured are:
Use of transitions into and out of character
Ability to create a believable character
Communication of objective, tactics, and relationships
Use of focus and concentration
Integration of voice, body, movement, and staging.
• Begin with an introduction (slating). The introduction must include only:
o the entrant’s names,
o troupe number,
o title of both selections, and
o name of the playwright.
• Remain within strict time limits.
o Time will begin once a performer begins acting after the conclusion of the introduction (slating).
o Monologues are not to exceed three minutes. • Prepare two selections.
o Monologues should represent two contrasting selections (may be different in period, style or mood).
o Each selection should be approximately one and one half minutes each.
o Each selection should reflect an important moment in the play.
o Only one character from each play may be portrayed in each selection.
• Choose appropriate material.
o Material must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre.
o Material from other forms such as poetry, fiction, or film is prohibited.
o Stand-alone monologues found online or in monologue books are prohibited.
• Follow strict limits on clothing and props.
o Props (including hand held props), costumes, or theatrical makeup are not allowed.
o One chair may be used.
o Entrants must wear all black.
o Entrants must wear dark, preferably black, shoes.
o Clothing should be professional yet allow easy movement for the actor to accommodate the action of the performance.
o Entrants should refrain from wearing anything that might distract the adjudicators.
