Dr. Lynn Cummings, an astrophysicist, tries to bring science and faith into balance while grappling with personal questions, reconnecting with her daughter, and mourning the loss of her husband. When an unidentified object is discovered heading toward Earth, a less-than-reputable online magazine misquotes her, casting doubt on her credibility. The two-time Nobel Prize nominee and the ambitious journalist monitor the mysterious object. Dr. Cummings hopes to witness nothing remarkable and thus save her reputation, but there is no telling what she will discover beyond the stars.
We are the first Texas school to compete in the UIL OAP contest.

District OAP Notes and Agenda 2024 (posted 3/3/24)
DR. CUMMINGS: Female, 50’s-60’s. An astrophysicist, professor. She is very intelligent, somewhat sardonic, a believer in facts. She was widowed two years ago and is still in mourning. She has a daughter, OLIVE. Cummings receives a diagnosis of early onset dementia but shows only slight signs of it during the play.
OLIVE: Female, Cummings’ daughter, 20’s-30’s. Smart, self-possessed, caring. A positive, smart, attractive person, she believes in more than she can see or, unlike her mother, is at least open to the possibility. She is a doctoral candidate in English literature. They clash over this and other things. Still, she loves her mother very much. She and Jason are a possible fit.
JASON: Male, 30’s. A journalist, he is “floating through life” somewhat. He works for a magazine he doesn’t respect, has recently broken up with a girlfriend, and isn’t sure what he believes about the greater questions. He does want there to be more than this. He wants there to be meaning and order. Ethical, intelligent, searching.
HALEY: Any gender. A teacher’s assistant (T.A.) who works for Dr. Lynn. Intelligent although sometimes acts a little superior to Dr. Cummings, as if this is a time that will pass and then HALEY will rightfully be in charge. The beloved offspring of the provost.
CHANCELLOR: Any gender. The head of the University. Lifelong friend of Lynn. Compassionate, wants to help Lynn, but has to think of the University.
TAYLOR: Any gender. Jason’s superior at GRATE magazine (formerly called FARRELL) Has no moral issues to do what it takes to get more followers.
DOCTOR: Any gender. The specialist that Lynn sees.
TOM: an off stage (O.S.) voice, Lynn’s husband. Compassionate. Loves Lynn and loves his current situation. (can be a crew member, but would like to have a student perform this role and be listed in the program as a judgeable character)
MESSENGER: Any gender.

The League's One-Act Play Contest, founded in 1927, is the largest high school play production contest or play festival in the world. More than 14,000 Texas high school students in more than 1,200 plays participate in 300 plus contests, which take place from the beginning of March through the three-day, 40-production State Meet One-Act Play Contest. The One-Act Play Contest is supported by more than 300 members of the Texas Theatre Adjudicator and Officials Organization. The League's theatre program is considered by historians to be the foundation of educational and community theatre in Texas. It continues to be a major factor motivating increasing numbers of schools to offer theatre arts as an academic subject.
The UIL One-Act Play contest is a competition where similarly sized Texas schools present an 18-40 minute play and may be adjudicated by a panel of three judges or a single judge. The contest is held on a single day and open to the public. There are six possible levels of competition: Zone, District, Bi-District, Area, Region, and State. At each level of competition a judge awards individual acting awards as well as selecting three productions to advance to the next level of competition up to the Regional Level where only two will advance to the State Level. After the awards are announced a Judge gives an oral critique to each of the schools. Because of the wide participation and diversity of plays produced certain rules and guidelines have been adopted by the State One-Act Play Office. These rules are in place to ensure safety, allow for equity, satisfy legal standards, and make the running of the contest practical.
