Home communion involves the taking of the Lord’s Supper to those who are unable, for health reasons, to make it to worship; in other words, those who are homebound. Ideally, home communion will be taken to these individuals on the first Sunday of each month which is when the rest of our congregation celebrates this sacrament, but weekdays are an option. A training on home communion will be offered as part of a regularly scheduled deacons’ meeting.
There are a couple of ways that we might structure the serving of home communion. One way is that of deacons taking the Sacrament to the individual’s home/room/apartment. Another option is for all our members who live in a facility to gather in a multi-purpose room so that the deacons could serve several members together. As you would imagine, the first option is more personal and intimate; the second, less so, but it provides an opportunity for the worshipping community to gather. I’ve done it both ways, and prefer taking communion to individual homes, rooms, etc. I’ve also found it to be a challenge to reserve space in places like the Cypress, Sharon Towers, but I’m sure it can be done.
Our deacons were trained during the August 14th meeting. Pairs of deacons may sign up to serve home communion via the link above. Each pair will be provided with a scripted service of communion (also below), as well as the bread and the juice. The Parish Associate will compile a list of those persons who’ve indicated that they would like to receive communion. The deacons will need to contact their assigned person(s) and set up a time and a date. (The SignUp Genius states 10:30 on Sundays, but deacons can schedule a time after church to go. If the first Sunday of the month doesn't work, another week will be fine.)
Our Resident Pastors will be added to those serving Home Communion.
Alison has put together baskets with supplies (grape juice, cup, napkins, plate, laminated script/liturgy). These can be found in the mail room labeled "Home Communion Depot". Deacons will provide the bread (any bread/crackers will do!)
In my experience, serving the Sacrament is a powerful ministry which touches each person involved.
