What Are the Sacraments?
The definition of a sacrament is that it is “an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.”  The Latin word sacramentum means “a sign of the sacred.”

The seven sacraments are divided into three groupings: the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); the Sacraments of Healing (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick); and the Sacraments Serving the Church and the mission of the faithful (Holy Orders, Matrimony).

Registration

Our 2018-2019 catechism program for children ages 5 to 13 begins September 29th.  We meet in the parish school from 3 to 4:45 p.m.  This program includes preparation for First Communion.  Please complete and submit the following registration form to participate in our program.  The requested donation to participate in this program is $50 for the first child and $25 for each additional child.  No one is turned away for inability to make this donation.  You can donate in person at our parish office or you can donate online at:  

Our 2018-2019 Confirmation program for candidates ages 14-17 begins October 5th.  We meet every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month in the Church from 6 to 9 p.m.  We begin with prayer (Eucharistic Adoration/Confessions/Mass) and conclude with the presentation of a particular topic.  72 hours of preparation are required in the Diocese of Oakland to be eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  This is a 2 year program for most candidates.  Please complete the following registration form to participate in our program.

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism cleanses us from sin, and initiates us as members of the Christian community. The Catholic Church recognizes baptisms from other Christian denominations that baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Thus, adults or children who have been baptized in a valid Christian church are not baptized again in the Catholic Church.  For an online preview of the celebration of Baptism please

Children aged 6 and under are eligible to receive the Sacrament of Baptism at any of our regularly scheduled Masses, or at a group baptism outside of Mass on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 9 a.m.  Parents and Godparents are required to attend one class, which is offered on the first Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in our Pope St. John Paul II meeting room across the street from St. David of Wales Church.

Baptism Preparation Class

Parents and godparents are required to attend one baptism preparation class to baptize a child 6 years of age and under.  We offer this class on the first Sunday of every month at 10:30 a.m. in our Pope St. John Paul II meeting room across the street from St. David of Wales Church.

Anyone 7 years of age and older requesting baptism participate in a program of Faith Formation: 7-17 in RCIC; 18 and over RCIA

Please complete the following Baptism Application Form if you wish to baptize your child 6 years of age or younger at St. David of Wales Church.  We offer the Sacrament of Baptism at any of our regularly scheduled Masses or at our monthly group baptism (outside of Mass) on the second Saturday of every month at 9 a.m.  We do not offer private baptisms.  One baptism preparation class is required of parents and godparents.  Please click here to schedule a class.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The news we have been receiving about the horrible actions of priests, bishops and cardinals has stunned and disgusts me. Those who have harmed children and vulnerable adults must be held accountable. The bishops who refused to stop this immoral and criminal behavior must also be held accountable. I am shamed by the actions of these men and have vowed to work with all people of good will to make our Diocese a safe place for all. To that end, we have policies and procedures in place mandating that every person who serves in our Diocese, whether clergy, religious, staff or lay volunteer, receives training in how to identify and stop predatory behavior. The Diocese of Oakland has a zero tolerance policy to the sexual abuse of minors on the part of anyone who serves the church. We also have staff which respond to each allegation of abuse, and have a loving and responsive team to assist survivors of clerical sexual abuse. We have an independent Diocesan Review Board composed of lay experts in psychology, police investigators, retired judges and abuse survivors, which examines complaints of misbehavior. I follow their recommendations. I welcome the initiative of Cardinal DiNardo, President of the US Bishops Conference, whose August 16 statement can be found at http://www.usccb.org/news/2018/18-139.cfm, to establish an investigation into questions surrounding bishops’ accountability, an opening of new and confidential reporting channels for complaints, proper independence and lay, not clerical, leadership of the process. The love of Christ compels us to be better models of Jesus’ love, mercy, and healing. We must never violate the trust placed in us. As Bishop of Oakland, I promise there will be consequences for those who do.

Those celebrating quinceaños must be baptized, have received first communion and be in a confirmation program. A quinceañera can be celebrated at any regularly scheduled Mass in English or Spanish. We also schedule quinceañeras on Saturdays at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., but request a donation of $400.00 for this special arrangement, and you will have to make an agreement with musicians or a choir for the music. boutique/tradition
