Champaign Storm (Tandem)

Co-Motion Primera

Co-Motion has been building bicycles since 1988 and have earned a great reputation as builders of premium tandems. We chose Co-Motion because their company is a lot Steve's employer. Its a small, grass-roots American company that was both founded and driven by a strong passion to bring a kick ass product to the market. That's how Steve does at his work, and from what we can tell, those guys out there are doing the same.

After borrowing a tandem from our friends for a few years, we've learned a few things about what makes a tandem excel. At Co-Motion, you get to build your bike from scratch and choose almost any option you can dream up. There's a few ways to build up a road touring bike. In-fact, a road-touring bike is specific in itself, in case you're new to classifications of bikes. Tandems can be built to ride off road, carry lots of load, or even for flat out racing. A road touring bike is built with comfort, robustness, and stability in favor to light-weight, fragility, and twitchy handling. Co-Motion's Primera seemed to be best suited for us. It has a super durable cro-moly steel frame, 200mm disc brakes, clearance for 40mm wide tires, and plenty of mounts for racks, water bottles, a kick stand, and fenders. You have no idea how nice it is to have a friggen kickstand! On our first ride we used it at every rest stop to swiftly post up our bike without doing the stupid "will it balance" game with a non-kickstand bike.

The bike also has couplers for dis-assembly. These have been used in the industry for decades. The frame is built as normal bike and then they cut out the section where the coupler would be placed. The position is chosen so that the bike can be broken down into 3 pieces and placed into an airline approved 26x26x10 inch suitcase and checked as luggage.
