Current Status
Current Status
The project to improve the staffing structure at Pocasset Mental Health Center has begun with the installation of a nurse manager as approved by the DMH Area Director and the Office of Inpatient Management (OIM). The nurse manager is now being trained. Training regarding the Teach-Back method has also begun, and the auditing of medication education documentation is underway to collect baseline data. Next steps are to provide a presentation regarding the plan, provide training to nursing staff on the importance of documentation and auditing and to continue Teach-Back method trainings. Creating a new assignment sheet will be followed by training regarding and implementation of the milieu manager role and use of learning huddles.Â

An existing staffing shortage is a barrier to timely completion of this project, but the use of temporary (agency) nursing staff has helped to mitigate the impact of this challenge. Another barrier recently identified is the removal of the electronic medical record (EMR) template specifically designated for medication teaching. The generic patient teaching template is being used by nurses to document medication teaching, but auditing will be impacted.
