About the Creative Youth Center (CYC)

The Grand Rapids Creative Youth Center prepares kids for life’s adventures by supporting their writing and amplifying their voices.
We believe that while nurturing kids’ writing can give them access to the world, fostering their creativity may allow them to change the world.
At the CYC, kids become published authors, leading to a strong sense of identity and an enthusiasm for learning. Our programs are free for all students attending Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Log-line for the "Selections From: I Am the Stars That Light Up the Midnight Sky" animation project

This assemblage of animated poems will amplify the powerful voices of middle school girls--many of whom, as young women of color, are under-represented in American media. Viewers will get to glimpse the internal landscapes of girls sifting through questions of identity, belonging, equity, race, and whether or not you can really eat too much candy on Halloween. Distribution will be on YouTube with Closed Captioning and an audio-description version.

Notes From Aug. 21, 2017 Meeting With Brianne

Have Brianne's contact (Cherish) talk about how people of color should be represented before the project starts and review the animations for stereotypes, etc. Contact Fable if Cherish is not available.

Brianne will e-mail photos of girls (but will check with Kristin first).

Brianne will visit both classes Wed. 10:00 and 7:00 - 17 Fountain, Front door, call upon arrival. We are on the 7th floor in room 709 for Bill (616-901-3462) at 10:00 AM and room 708 for Jessica (616-212-6065) at 7:00 PM.

Guidance:

What in it for the poets? the project builds resilience + self worth built on a mastery of writing skills.
What is in it for the audience? - We are fighting Implicit Bias
Target Age Group: 12 to adult.
Avoid stereotyping when designing characters and scenes
If you are illustrating... illustrate directly in Animate.
If you are using composited photography... Create layouts in Photoshop
